50x60x12 shop lighting advice request

I’m in the final stages of construction of my new shop addition and am ready to start my inside electrical. I have looked through countless posts on the lighting thread and I’m still not sure which way to go. First off, I do mostly automotive work, fabricating and builds, some motorcycle work as well. Lots of detailed work, and at 56, I need more light than I used to. As stated, it’s a 50x60x12 with scissor trusses giving a height at the inside peak of around 16’. Inside walls and ceiling are all bright white metal. Also within the space is an 18x26x8 assembly/clean(ish) room, also finished out in white metal. I’m going with LED lights, I’m just not sure what my best bang for the buck will be. I welcome any and all input and thanks in advance. Ron

Have you checked out this thread?

I believe it contains the answers you are looking for in a shop light. Not sure what to tell you on the assembly/clean room.

Do you have a budget for lighting?

Nice shop! I just signed the papers to build a 40x48x12 wood shop in April. I plan on using LED fixtures listed on the sticky in this section. Mine will be all open except a 10x16 finishing room. I am sheetrocking the ceiling not sure yet on walls.

Thanks. I'm anxious to get it finished and functional. I'm happy with the way it turned out.

Just thought I’d post an update on my lighting project. I had Platonic Solid work up a lighting layout plan for me and I am very happy with the results. I used 20 110W 1’x2’ LED panel fixtures. I have yet to install the strip lights over the assembly room to illuminate that area, but the work area is going to be great. These pics show up darker than it actually is.

Thanks for posting the "after" photos. That is one evenly lit floor! Is epoxy in the cards? I like how the door track is up and out of the way from day one.

Nice space.

Nice space.

Thanks. I sure would like to do the floor in a light color epoxy, but the cost of doing 3000 sf will probably nix that thought. At the very least, I need to seal it to try and protect against oil spills or whatever else might happen. I’ve read through so many threads on the floor coating issue that I’m exhausted. Lol. Thanks again for the compliments. Ron

We're planning on building a 50x60x18 metal building in the next couple of months. Was wondering what your thoughts are on the lighting for it. If I were to use your set up but exclude the cut out for the enclosed area do you think the added height will affect the light at work height? It's going to have white backing insulation and no interior liner panels. Will have a 24x16 sectional door centered on one gable wall and then have a 20x16 sectional door on the right wall 5 feet from the back gable wall. I like your light layout and wanted to use it but don't want to mess up if we need to go with a different light fixture or bulb. Your help would be appreciated very much.

slimbozy - Every space is different. Your height will require higher output fixtures. It sounds like you'll have exposed purlins. If so, making a plan around the purlins as mounting locations will keep installation costs down. Hard to provide any advice without drawings that show actual details including ceiling pitch.

It is a 2:12 roof pitch. I will get one drawn up tonight. And you are correct, we will be having exposed galvanized finished purlins and girts.

Thank you Platonic

Wish I could see one in person, before shelling out 1k+ for them.

Would the 2' allow half as many needed, I have about 50w x 50l that could use good lighting. My shop is still being adjusted for the interior layout, lighting may play into the lighting layout. And still working on the 20' eve with a 4:12 pitch roof in a steel building.

Thank you

hemiallen - Not sure what these comments mean: "Would the 2' allow half as many needed", "lighting may play into the lighting layout".

The Alphalite was chosen for Ronz shop due to the surface mounting brackets. If you don't need those, then the James (link - first 6 fixtures on that page are James lights) is a better deal.

If you're saying you will be mounting fixtures at 20ft in a 50x50, then a higher output fixture is required. 50x50x20 with 16 (4x4) arrangement 12.5' center to center spacing 24,563 Lumen (165W) (link) = 111fc @ 30" work plane.

Edit: Where are you located? "S" isn't very helpful.

Just another option I incorporated. I have a 35’x50’ (18’ ceiling) work area which originally had three 8 tube fixtures mounted to the ceiling (still in place). I went to Costco and picked up 8 of their LED 4’ fixtures and mounted them to the walls.

They are plugged into a remote control switch so when I walk in/out of the shop, I can turn on/off as needed. Combined with the original ceiling lights, I have more than enough light for anything I need to do. The fixtures were $24 each and took me less than an hour to hang. There are 3 on one wall, 4 on the opposite wall and 1 in front of my lift.

These are the ones platonic suggested to us. 26 of the 110w led lights from green light depot in a 50x60x18 building

Thanks Platonic.

Ok, didn't think of the mounting changing the suggestion, and thanks for the link suggestion.

Edited my location, didn't realize I didn't have it correct.
