Hi All,

Got lots of great ideas from this forum, many thanks. Enough that I wanted to do something at my 1bed/1bath rental cottage. Took me over a year to finally get the owner of the property to let me have the one car garage that is attached to my place. He had old refrigerators, bumpers, wood, junk, etc. About a month after I got the garage my rent increased $100 a month, funny how that worked out for me...

Here it is, not much but it's my little cave. Well, it's my rented little cave. The flooring is a rubber mat purchased at Lowe's. They no longer sell them and I had to track one down not at my local store. Once there I asked the manager for a discount since they were discontinued. He said sure, why not and knocked I think 40% off, lol. Got it for around $120. I then found some vinyl checkered tiles on Ebay, for around $50 for two boxes. More than enough since I only wanted to go down the edges under the mat which wasn't actually as wide as the garage. They also don't need to support any weight so all good there.

The cabinets are inexpensive Coleman units from Lowe's as well. Hey it's a rental and I'm not rich. I liked the way they looked, I was able to get just the right combo in for what I needed and "Bob's your uncle".

A couple of wire shelving units (with the BMW flags) hold house items and some garage items as well. Wire cubes hold my helmets, boots, gloves and visiting friends gear as well. The bent stainless steel cart was a freebie from my office, it will be strengthened with some aluminum angle bar stock when I have some extra time.

The bike, lucky I only have one, is a 2004 BMW Boxer Cup Replica. I've only had it since March of '09 so it needed a nice place to live.

Still planning on a few more things, like some thin ceiling cover of some sort.

Comments and suggestions on any part of the garage are welcome.

8-26-2011: Adding a few "before" pictures, since it's always nice to see how nasty something was before hand...

Just after all the yuck was cleaned out and it got hosed down.
NakedGargage.jpg

Checkerboard indoor vinyl "self adhesive" tiles from eBay layed down, two courses wide. Just enough for the rubber mat that will be coming next.
TilesDown.jpg

Rubber mat from Lowes. It actually longer than the garage is deep so a little trimming and I was good to go.
RubberMat.jpg

One of the reasons I decided to go this way is that this is a rental unit, and I wanted to be able to roll up the mat, hit the tiles with a scraper and ****...I was never there...

Moving in the good stuff...

I like it. It's a real neat, clean, well-organized looking space. Some guys don't appreciate the stuff, but I dig that pegboard above the bench.

wow, nice work on a budget! remember this forum when you build your dream garage someday, it looks like you have a great knack for it.

for ceiling cover, another member on here used checker flag (black and white like your floor) material bought by the roll at a fabric store. That'd be inexpensive and would tie in nicely. just a thought

Wow! You've really made the best use of limited space. You're evidently very, very organized. Good job!

Thanks all for the kind words. It isn' much but it's a rental so there ya go.

A_Pmech, ya the Vansons do look pretty new don't they? They were actually an eBay find in the hopes of some track days. I don't wear them much on the street unless I want to feel real racey.

rieferman, interesting idea with the fabric. I'll have to look into that to see what that might run. Would definitely be an easy install with a staple gun. :willy_nil

I was thinking of buy a few of the tall Coleman cabinets from Lowes, how do you like them? They certainly are an inexpensive alternative to some I have seen.... and they would match my paint scheme. :D

Nice garage!

Hi StumpXJ, So far so good. They are just simple particle board units, but that's what makes them inexpensive. I liked their looks with the little diamond plate style accents and rubberized handles. More "shoppish" IMHO than just the standard white cabinets you find everywhere. I wouldn't think they would be great in a super heavy use situation but they fit my needs well and went together quickly, just like building Ikea furniture. :bounce:

I too have a small space to work with. I'd like to know what the cabinets set you back if you don't mind me asking?

Hi Born_Annoyed, I don't mind passing on what the cabinets cost at all. Compared to some of these builds here they are near free, hehe. I think our garages are very close size wise, I've already forgotten the measurements of mine, since I'm only doing fun stuff to it now.

I have four pieces purchased from Lowe's that all together total approximately $540.00 per their website. I kept my eyes open for a while and Lowe's does put these cabinets on sale from time to time. I got lucky on a few of the pieces so I saved $20 here and there.

I notice that on the Lowe's website they are calling the cabinets Sauder, though I can still see the Coleman plaques in the pictures. I've attached links to the corresponding Lowe's webpage at the bottom of each of the photos.

I have the following pieces:

75-3/8"H x 31-1/8"W x 19-5/8"D Garage Cabinet: $168.88

33-5/8"H x 31-1/8"W Base Cabinet: $154.00

33.625"H x 31.125"W x 19.625"D Garage Cabinet: $118.00

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=111296-440-403340&lpage=none

And finally my favorite piece that has a little built in power strip and flourescent light...
Pegboard Hutch: $98.87

Hope that answers your questions. If you have more just ask and if I can I'll answer away...

 It's clean, it's affordable, and it's just the right size to clear your head. Today, those three things are all that matter in a garage!!!

Hi Marty, Really appreciate the comment. Keep them coming guys (& gals), it makes doing this to a rental all worth it to know that others like what I've put together for myself. Sure, my wife likes it, but she would probably tell me it was nice even if it sort of sucked. Hearing opinions from those with "real" garages makes me feel great.

To you all! And to all the other great garages out there.

HSpencer, that is WAY too kind. Compared to the garages I drool on in this forum, I'm not even close, hehe. I really do appreciate the thought though! Here's raising a beer to you...

Good space man, I too am stuck with a tiny one car garage, only 10' wide however it is 24' deep so I have that going for me. What's the dimensions on yours?

SMSTEVE, what a transformation! Good On You! Has your landlord compensated you in any way? I don't know your location, but did you add any insulation for winter work on the bike? It looks like a skillful use of space and organization; well done.

I agree with the other posters, very nice. Nice and clean, great transformation. It is also nice to have the ability to take everything out and move it to your one-day forever garage.

Its also cool to see the spectrum here on the forum. You get 20-car garages with a built in micro mansion that hold Ferraris and then you get the 1-car garage remodels and you know what? Everyone stands on equal footing and everyone is treated the same. Love it.

Hi Richb82, thanks, it gets the job done. I really didn't remember any measurements so I busted out the Stanley Tape Measure. It's a whopping 9' wide by 18' deep. Ceiling is 10' at the front and slopes down to about 7.5' in back where the cabinets and bench are.

Hey, I guess it's not the size of the garage...it's what you do with it huh?:lol_hitti

how much did that rubber mat run ya? do you like it?

I got the mat for around $120 on discontinued sale from Lowes. I really liked it in the beginning when it was all clean and shiny, hehe. Now it's got some scuff marks from the motorcycle tires and they don't want to come out too easily. I need to convince the cleaning guys from my office to come with their industrial cleaning machine and buff that sucker up!

But, in all fairness, for the cost I'm happy with it and it will roll up and go away if and when that time comes.

Omphaloskeptic, thanks! I thought so too. From gross to not too shabby!

Has the landlord compensated me? LOL, ya right. Not this guy. He did like it and asked (jokingly) if I'd do all the other garages. Sorry pal, not going to happen. Besides the other people just mainly use theirs for storing ****.

I'm in Southern California in a LA suburb, so no winter issues. It may get down into the freezy 50's on occasion, hehe. A few minutes with the portable heater and no more cold. One good thing about the size I guess?

Thanks again!

Thanks Red Leader, much appreciated. For as small as it is, there sure is a LOT of stuff in there and I hope to not have to move any of it any time soon.

I know what you mean on the full spectrum. I drool over the "giant" wareages (warehouse/garage) and I enjoy a good three car, two car and even the 'lil one cars like I have. It's really a great forum and I spend entirely TOO MUCH time reading all the posts and learning from everyone.

SMsteve, is that Angeles Crest? I lived near Barstow for two years (08-09) and went on the Crest right after it reopened. Lots of great riding in SoCal!!

I'm with Red Leader- don't get me wrong- the large, custom garages and shops are phenomenal, and something we would likely all love to do given the means, but the vast majority of us have more modestly sized garages and budgets. While we can fondly look at the large ones for eye candy and the occasional cool, inexpensive element for our own space, it is often the smaller of our spaces that can create the most thought provoking ideas with regards to function.

Nice job to you for taking a 9x18 rental space and making it feel as custom as many larger, owned units! I for one liked your helmet storage solution- would love to know where you got that wire rack at- was it designed as a vertical mount originally? Will need one for myself, soon...

humm about you real garage comment. Yours is as real as anyone elses. Great job on it. I like the material idea for the celling...try "Good Will" or the "Salvation Army" for old flat sheets, cheep and the money helps the needy

Yes, it is ACH. That photo was taken shortly after they reopened it. We were stopped looking at that bridge that was one of the reasons for the long delay in getting the highway back operational again. You can see the bridge off in the distance in my photo. Pretty awesome drop right there too, if you went off...oh my!

I originally found the storage cubes at Target and also OSH. They came in all kinds of colors, but I bought a box of each of the following colors: white, blue and black. The box that I bought would make a two wide by three tall six cube setup or a different combination depending on which way you built it. I sourced some wire closet system hangers that worked good at suspending the cubes and as I wasn't weighing the down much they have worked out fine. If I remember right they were about $20 or so a box. I found some on-line that look similar from a company called Safco, but the price is higher and it's only a four cube setup. Maybe I got lucky for once. If you have an OSH or Target near you I'd run by there and see if they had any of the six cube sets left.
