I'm starting this thread to detail the build of my auto-workshop. It will be attached to the current two car on the garage however we're not planning on opening up the space. Dimensions are limited by both the set back requirements and the size of the existing structure. Contractor has been selected and we're starting to finalize the design.

* Garage will be 24' wide by 26' deep.
* One single 10' x 8' door
* 9' height, but ceiling will be vaulted to match shape of the truss garage it will be attached to for maximum height. We'll be using rafters and a 14" LVL ridge beam.
* Liftmaster opener with door track to follow the ceiling.
* Lift will be an in ground scissor, likely the Atlas model from Greg Smith

Things to decide.
* Location of 10x8 door plus location for the man doors.
* Location of lift so the contractor can do the floor pour
* Windows (how many and where to locate)

Interior trim
* Porcelain tile floor
* drywall
* sink

Garage will be a primary workshop for my 964, and will be auto only. I already have a dedicated wood shop in the basement and an exterior shed for the mowers and lawn equipment.

Below is a very basic sketch-up drawing that I'm starting with.

The biggest, and hardest decision I need to make is where to locate the lift pits and garage door. to maximize the working space around the car.

Will you be putting any other vehicles on the lift to work on? Leave enough room to the right side of the lift to allow for pulling your running gear on the largest vehicle that will see the lift, then give yourself a buffer of say 20-30" for any benches/cabinetry/equipment. If you place the lift back far enough into the garage and center the roll-up door to the lift, you could conceivably back the Porsche in to the left side of the garage and still use the lift with another vehicle if you have minimal other equipment/benches on the left.

Then put your main workbench at the back left corner, to allow enough room forward and aft of the lift for longer vehicles, while still allowing room for the Porsche to back in on the left side.

The only other vehicle that would be a candidate is my wife's Volvo XC90. My my other garage I don't think they'll ever be a need to have more then one car in the garage.

I did a few updates to the drawing. Lift is centered in the door. Not sure about the location of the window at the rear. Should it be centered in the wall, or would it look better offset?

A few additional crude drawings. I only have a few hours of Sketchup experience.

Agreed on the final building specifications today. Should be signing the contract by the end of the week.

* In the current location of the new garage is my 16 x 12 foot shed. We'll be replacing the shed with a 22' x 18' foot pole barn located on the corner of the property. Same builder will be doing that. They came today to stake out the building location so the township can approve it.

Tomorrow I'll try and take some pictures that show the general layout. No start date yet for the attached garage, but we're targeting late spring / early summer.

A few pictures of the layout.

This is the back of the existing garage where the new bay will go. The shed will be removed.

The new shed will be the opposite corner of the property, which is outside our sight lines from the back deck. Here's the tractor imaging its new parking spot.

Lastly, here's a general shot showing the view off the back of our property. There used to be some overgrown pine trees but we had them removed.

Are you going to have the pole barn doors facing the house? If anything else, piece of mind to glance outside to make sure you closed everything up instead of walking out there in the dark in the rain.

My neighbor left his shed doors open with all his tools for 3 days since he couldn’t see them from the house. He lives on a corner so there’s extra exposure to prying eyes.

Yes, the pole barn door will face the house. We'll likely also have a Nest camera and Yale smart lock on the man door.

As part of the design, the builder will be installing lights to my specification. To that end, I'm looking for some help on how to best light this space.

As you can see from the picture showing the rear of the garage, it's going to have a steeply pitched ceiling.

We're giving the existing shed to one of my wife's coworkers. Tomorrow's project is to clear it out and remove the ramp and pressure treated border so the shed company can come pick it up. Our regular garage will be full for awhile.

Two side views with the lift positioned as shown above with the leading edge ~7ft in from the garage.

First, the outline of the 964 at max height. Appears to fit with no issues, and leaves about 6" to the rear assuming a 24" workbench.

Screen Shot 2020-02-29 at 10.06.28 PM by duncanrellis, on Flickr

* Second shot shows our other car, a Volvo XC90. I'm really not planning on doing any major service work with this vehicle, so other than tire rotations, brake work, and oil changes it'll probably never see time in this shop. It could not be lifted to full height if pulled in front first, although it probably would be okay backed in.

Screen Shot 2020-02-29 at 10.05.03 PM by duncanrellis, on Flickr

* I could move the lift back one additional foot. That would still give 5ft of working room behind the 911, and more if I moved the toolbox.

Thoughts?

No comments? I could really use some feedback here. The more I think about it the more I think it should be 8 feet.

???

I've put together a quick 2D cad drawing that shows the positioning of everything. I'm still struggling with where to locate the lift depth wise.

* Not deep enough and I limit the height I can lift to.
* Too deep and it's difficult to pull the engine out of the 964.

Great looking building. The view is incredible.
Your question should be answered somewhere in the “12 guage garage” thread.

Siding should be wrapped up tomorrow. The concrete guy has dropped off his trailer. I think the plan is to pour either Friday or first thing on Monday. The last step will be the garage door.

We're just waiting on the building permit for the other garage, but might be able to start that in just a few weeks. Things are moving fast.

Not certain but from counting the 12”x12” tiles on the floor of the 12gauge garage, it would seem that the rear edge of his lift “pit” is approx 6.5’ from his door. This configuration leaves him just enough room to squeeze his Porsche guts out the back.

I'm getting to crunch time on finalizing the details on the attached garage. A last remaining detail is slab insulation. My contractor doesn't think it's necessary but is happy to do it. I'm undecided.

* I'm in CZ4
* I plan to condition the shop year round with a Mitsubishi mini-split
* Walls will be 2x6 with R19 and R38 in the ceiling.
* Structure is attached to the house so will have a full foundation.

Looking good...very interesting size of a shed you decided on.
Will be interesting to see what you do when you clean out the one stall of the garage....good for you!

The shed size was a matter of setback restrictions. If I stayed under 400sq ft, I could put the shed 10ft from the lot line. Anything larger, and that setback increased to 35ft from the rear and 25ft from the sides. From past experience, decided we'd rather have more depth than width, which is why the shed is 18 x 22 and not 20 x 20.
