I live in Minnesota and use my water hose in my garage year round. What drives me to drink is when it's cold you can't coil the hose back up. Can anyone recommend a hose that can coil up at 50 degrees. I want the best and price is not of concern. Thanks in advance.

You want a hybrid pvc hose. I have a Flexilla , and while it's OK, I wouldn't consider them great . one thing the colour gets real dirty real fast and I know its just a garden hose, but.... they are OK, don't get me wrong.
I bought some hybrid hoses from Princess Auto here, and they are much better. ( IMO)

We like our 100% rubber hose. It drags a bit harder pulling several feet of it through the grass compared to a vinyl hose, but it handles easier and rolls up easier than anything else we've tried.

I have Goodyear hoses that are left lying in the yard in Texas heat year round that are going on 14 years old now. Love them. I went to expand my hose inventory two years ago and went back to the homedepot to get some more of the Goodyear brand. They no longer carry them but had Continental brand which were USA made and seemed about as good as the Goodyear. We shall see how the new ones hold up.

Not sure how the heavy rubber will react in the cold as far as becoming stiff but I can’t recommend the Goodyear hoses enough if you can find them.

In for info on this thread.

I've been using two Swan Soft & Supple hoses for almost twenty years. They've given fine service and the one that works hardest is due for replacement this year as its outer housing is cracking (although it hasn't started leaking yet).

I've been happy with Swan, and I see they've licensed the Goodyear name for one of their lines. I'll bet those *are* good hoses, as those who have reported on their ownership are saying.

In general, rubber will remain more flexible down to lower temperatures than synthetics like PVC or polyurethane. It's also heavier, most of the time (companies are working on lower density rubber compounds to address that).

I've spent forty years in and around polymer science and technology, and it's frustrating for companies to use nonspecific terms like "hybrid". Sure, it's a popular buzzword, but I'd like to know what the hose construction is *really* based on to make decisions.

Don't buy this at Harbor Freight. It's stiff at any temperature.

I have a GATOR HYDE hose that I purchased 12 years ago and it is one of the best hoses I have ever had and lasted all year outside in heat and freezing cycles....... Too bad they don’t make or sell them anymore and "IF" you can find one, buy it!

I have a flexzilla hose and a craftsman. Both are great and would recommend them to anyone. I got the craftsman one because of the warranty (so much for that in a way) but the flexzilla is nice. I have their air hose too and like it a lot.

I just bought one of the flex hoses on amazon (ones that shrink when not in use).

The flexzilla is a little pricey but overall if something happens to it in the years to come I’d have no problem getting another one

I’ve owned a Craftsman 50’ hose...no kink...for years but I don’t know if they are still available. Check with a garden center

A rubber hose for sure. If it's in the garage, can you get a hot water supply to it? Best thing I ever did. Hose usable at any outside temps, great for deicing too.

Check out the pocket hose. I got it for use in the house. When not under pressure it’s like a rope. Not sure on longevity though as just had it for a year

We have one we use for camping. Just make sure you watch the total water pressure going into it. I hooked our first pocket hose up to a hose bib at a campsite and I don't know what the pressure was coming out of that thing, but it blue the hose apart. I ended up buying a small pressure regulator designed for RVs to keep it from happening again.

Whatever hose you get make sure it has brass ends, not aluminum. While the aluminum ended hoses are cheeper, if left on the faucet, the aluminum fitting on the hose will seize to the brass hose bib (dissimilar metals) and after a few months your only option for removing the hose will be to cut it and replace the hose bib.

Those aluminum hose fittings are quite possibly the stupidest money saving invention ever.

The craftsman hoses are no longer made in usa and do not have a lifetime warranty. Thankfully I bought several back in the day and should be good for my life.

The new ones may be good, Ive not seen one in person.

The colored Dram hoses posted by dustball above were USA made 3 years ago when I last checked. I've had a purple one lying in the so cal sun for 7 years. It faded a bit, but no cracking yet. They are 8 sided hose, just like the old craftsman black ones that are so loved.

The rubber ones do get stiff in cold but they are better than anything else I have found. Conti makes some of them, and Goodyear makes others. I won't own a vinyl hose anymore - they are too troublesome.

I've had a Flexzilla for 6 years and it is nothing super special. It is lighter than a regular hose and the tangles come out easier, but it still has a bit of memory depending on how it is rolled up.

For sure buy the best goodyear or continental all rubber hose you can buy. I'm sure the craftsman is similar. Other alternatives will break eventually while the rubber hoses will continue to work as designed.

I have Craftsman black rubber and I like them...no idea if they still exist for sale.

I have the same ........guessing mine are over 20 years old. They have been great. Brass ends. Suspect they are no longer available. They were costly back in the day but came with life time warranty.

Agree on 100% rubber .........no vinyl of any kind, no matter what the claims are.
100% rubber will kink because it’s flexible.

Edit:looks like they might be available at least similar?

Craftsman hose on Amazon does not look the same as the Ace version.

I have had the best flexible performance from Swan .....soft and supple. Lots of positive comments about the Goodyear hose. I had the end blown off a brand new one. Poor quality control.

And don’t buy anything but brass ends. Aluminum will seize on to other connections and become permanent. They will not be removable. Galvanic reaction I think is what it’s called.

Definitely a pure rubber hose with brass ends. I used to water horses in Canada in the winter among other things outside and that is the way to go. We also used to flood ice rinks where the hose layed on the ice.
