Loosen the screws a little (reinstall them), tap the heads lightly, plate should come out. You can also use a plierench (or similar) to grab the drive and pull on it, wiggling a bit. Can put the screws in on the plate side and use them to pull on.

Great tips....

She's quite stubborn but it's really old. Does the pawl come out? Mine won't come out and I don't want to force it

You'll get the plate off by yanking on the square drive with locking pliers. The pawl will come out after you punch the reverse lever out with a pin punch.

Well sir, that was no fun at all. I'm sure some of you already know where this is going.

I got it all apart pretty easy with the tips from some of the fellas but when I looked at how it went together I knew I was in for a pain in the a**.

I struggled getting that ball bearing back in and after countless attempts at using fingers only (dropping the bearing several times as well) I made myself a little tool that worked perfect. I snipped out a piece of thin curved plastic from an aerosol can lid and filed a nice flat spot in the bottom of it to help keep that pesky bearing in place. Got it on the first try and the pawl went in perfect.

I reached for another part of the ratchet and I heard the whole thing go "ping" and then I hear the little bearing hit the wall somewhere behind me (but didn't see it) and roll. I couldn't believe it, after all that and finally getting it in place I do something stupid like this........spent the next hour trying to find it and thank god I did finally. The lesson here is never take your fingers off that area, it's loaded up and ready to fire!

Finally after learning my lesson, I got it all back together and it works beautiful thanks to Moose and his Permatex White Lithium suggestions.

Ha.....yeah Snap On around where I live is a joke. So much so that no one will even bother to try and buy Snap On. Utterly useless, which is a shame.

There used to be a guy, and I laugh at the thought of him actually having this tool, but he was god awful to say the least. Last I heard his truck mysteriously "burned down". Good luck finding a dealer.

We used to have a Snap On guy......his truck "burned". We once had a MAC guy, his truck also "burned".

We have an industrial supplier nearby that offers Snap On but he gives the WORST service you could ever ask for. I broke a set of diagonal cutters and he took them saying he would warranty them. A year......that's right A YEAR later he hands the replacement to me, wrong smaller size ones. Whatever, not worth the fuss.

We also have another industrial supplier nearby that offers Proto. This guy is something else let me tell ya. I stopped dealing with him about 2 months after he started because basically he didn't wanna bother with Proto, only the cheaper **** like Westward that they make big money off. This guy pissed me off so much that I won't even speak to him anymore.

The whole thing has degenerated into complete foolishness. I get my own tools on my own time.

Yeah, me too. Like everything else I have that's Snap-on, I have several of these.:spit: I've given a few away too.

Back to the ratchet, after I pull the screws, I usually smack them on my butcher block top on my tool box. At least the older ones like the OP's that have pinned on paws.

I'm actually not 100% sure if I put it back together right. In any instructions I've seen they want you to peen the lever once installed. This isn't possible with mine.

The levers pin portion does not poke all the way through the pawl when it's fully installed. It sits kinda like in a cup in the pawl (It's open on both sides). The hole in the pawl is just big enough to get a pin punch through down to the lever pin and drive it out. I wonder if it's broken off?
