I saw a new blue Kobalt box at Lowe's. 35" wide for $500
It also has an integrated power strip on the side.
There is a top chest available, also for $500, and it has PIONEER speakers in it.

The older Kobalt boxes were royal blue, back when Kobalt tools were made by Williams / Snap on.
This is a different kind of blue, more subdued.

The ones I have seen in the lowes by me are horrible. The draws are supper shallow and a pain to open and close. They look really nice but the draw stick is sooo bad.

I was looking at those the other day. They are built better than the stainless ones. I was asking if a top box would be available without the stereo since I really don't need that.

They have that box at my local Lowes as well. The top and the bottom were together. The top has speakers and a stereo like that stainless box they have. I looked it over and I liked it. It would make a pretty cool homeowners box...

Put a little weight on it when you pull on the drawer. They open nicely with a little weight. Maybe we are talking about different ones, or that particular one was put together terribly. They don't look too bad to me though.

The strong drawers detents may be a benefit that are only realized with a drawer weighted with tools.

In an empty drawer it may feel like it's too tight.

I don't think Williams made the boxes, just the tools. That was around 1999-2000

I saw these boxes on Lowes a few weeks ago. They "looK" better built than anything else they have had but still kind of questionable. Read the reveiws on the Kobalt tool boxes. very bad

Harry Epstein has a top and bottom Williams box for about $1000. Made in Canada I think. Probably the same as SO's Canadian line I'd venture?

Looks nice, but you have to ask yourself, is it better than a ball bearing Cman box that you can get for about half the price? I say no.

The biggest complaint I have about some boxes like the HF and Kobalt is the side-to-side slop in the drawers when they're open.

One of the reasons you had a tough time with the drawers is they have slide locks under the drawer pulls like Snap-On. You have reach under and move the lock to the left. It;s something that only takes a few minutes to get use to.

I have a couple of black Kobalt boxes (top and bottom) that are very well built. The top box is about 5 years old and the bottom box is about 2 years old and they both work flawlessly.

I don't need another box at this time but I will check out the new blue Kobalt boxes when I get a chance, thanks for posting this.

Are they made by Waterloo?

Which box are you referring to?
The one I pictured doesn't have that feature.
I believe the detents are in the back of the drawer.

The Kobalt boxes are really nice for the price. Unfortunately Lowe's "New Low Prices" on tool boxes and socket sets were temporary. Still a good value though.

I have one of these, bought a few months ago when it was $170. I should have bought two of them:

http://www.lowes.com/pd_274213-5573..._gps-_-gps-_-gps-_-Kobalt 5-Drawer Tool Chest

The quality absolutely owns my C'man Griplatch lower.

And I rather like the shallow drawers. I can spread my tools out in them without feeling like I'm wasting vertical space. If I get to the point where they're piled in there, I'll buy more storage.

The ones I saw had the sliding drawer detent to keep the drawers from opening while unlocked. I figured it out after a few pulls. Maybe not the same one but has that new really nice looking blue like in your photo. They had a set of top and bottom 41's. They looked much better built than the stainless versions which are pure ****.

I saw the box at Lowes yesterday and I was wrong about the drawer locks. The box is about 36-37 inches wide. The top and bottom (499 each) seem very well built, drawers felt good with very little wobble side to side. I think the radio in it is a hook and I'd rather have the same box without it. Overall I really liked it. Remeinds me of the first version of the Craftsman Professional series from like 10-15 years ago. I thought they were pretty nice. Seemed like they were a little deeper and the paint was excellant on the box. I love the new color and it blows away anything else Kobalt has as far as quality goes. I always question any toolbox with a radio built in. MAC tried that in the 80's. Huge flop

If they would throw these on sale on Black Friday for around 700 I might consider a set.

I just saw this set today at my local Lowes. Just got home to do some research on their toolboxes and came across this website. I'm with you mrwholeshot, give me a good black friday sale and you'll see this set in my garage. So for those complaining about shallow drawers, tough time opening and bad reviews.....that's on the older models? This particular set is a new item.....made better?

Here is an older Kobalt box. The picture is crappy so it's hard to tell the difference in the shade of blue.

my tools right now are all slung out over the welding table. i need some sort of rolling tool box and seen this one at lowes liked the idea of having the built in cd player (it goes bad i got 3 more sitting around i can swap into it. if i get it im thinking about adding a small 200w amp and upgraded speakers . any body got a idea where i can get a cheaper rolling tool box to put my sockets ratchets and air tools in?

Top and bottom are currently on sale for $399.
Might be on sale because of labor day

If you have a 10% Lowes coupon seems like a decent deal. The coupons are extremely common.

I bought one of these yesterday. I agree about the sticky drawers. The factory grease on the slides was pretty gummy. Wiping them off, and giving them, and the rubber detent snubbers a squirt of WD-40 smoothed things out significantly.

I don't agree about he drawer depth, at least on the bottom box. Actually drawer depth on this box is one of the things that attracted me to it. Three of the drawers measure 2.5", two are 3.5", and the bottom is 9.5".

A couple of drawers in the 5" range would be nice, but these are deeper than drawers on many boxes in this price range, and the extra deep bottom drawer is very useful. The box is 35" wide, and all the drawers are full length. The full length drawers is one of the things that really made this box attractive to me, and few boxes in this price catagory offer drawers this wide. This gives a lot of storage in a compact footprint. Some of this is subjective, it really depends on how you like to set your boxes up, but I prefer this to a wider box with split drawers.

Build quality seems pretty good. The steel is folded on the side and rear drawer edges, and there are 3 clips a side for the slide attachment, so the drawers are pretty rigid. The bottom drawer also has two slides per side. The slides look pretty much like everyone elses at this price, except they're black, the welds are clean and ground smooth, the drawer liners are as good as any you can buy, and for what it's worth, theres a cover. Overall fit and finish is very acceptable, I don't see any uneven gaps or anything visually out of square. The built in power strip is handy, and subjectively, I like the color.

On the downside, The drawer pull end caps are plastic, and tend to fall off when wiping the box down. Spares are provided, that seem to aknowledge a defficiency. I super glued mine on, so....we'll see.

The top is recessed for a 3/8" thick foam pad insert, it seems that a solid insert would be a lot more functional as a work surface if the top cabinet is not used, as in my case.

I think this box is going to be a keeper, but it's nice to know that Lowes has a pretty liberal return if It doesn't work out. I haven't seen anything I like better that isn't more money, but I'll keep my eyes open.

I know I am a jerk, spelling lesson of the day.

Drawer, drawers

super - like super man
supper - like food you eat in the evening.

I used to EFF up words like super all the time. I thought of a cool way to remember how to spell them correctly. Anything food related has more calories and more letters. Examples

desert - dessert
super - supper
diner - dinner

It worked for me!

The blue looks very different in store compared to pictures. What happened to the casters?

There's no photoshop there, thats the color. Maybe the lighting in the store gives a different look. There's a curb around the perimeter of my garage, and I set everything on top of it to give more space, then block up as needed. Obviously this will be used as stationary.

how were the old kobalt ones that were made by williams ?

I have the 2002-2003 Blue ball bearing Kobalt Bench box that I bought new then.
It is made by Waterloo, not Williams. I think all from the first generation were Waterloo.
That was when Hard line was Williams but not the boxes as far as I can remember.
