Bought the Kobalt base unit today for $275. Last one in the store. Would like to add the top unit at some point, but there wasn't one at my local store. Can someone give me the model number?

This is a quality chest.

Top chest should be 117770, I believe.

As a side note, I stopped by Lowes again on Saturday morning and went through the tool section. They had one base left - marked back up to $316! Must be since they went throguh the rest at $276 so quickly, they bumped it back up to make a few bucks. Either that or they expect someone to use their tax refund card to get one, so they factored in the 10% the buyer would get back later.

Funny. The one I bought was marked $316, but I asked them for a floor sample discount since it was the last one. Guy called the MOD who gave me $275. Seems that wasn't such a deal after all!

Anyway, I'm happy. The item is in perfect condition. So far, can't find the top unit anywhere, though. Plenty of room in the base for now.

Too bad we're so far apart, as I bought a top & bottom setup last week but I now plan to return the top cabinet and possibly pickup another base (if they'll give the same $276 price again).

If anyone in upstate NY is looking for this top cabinet, I have one I don't need!

I looked at this setup today. Was marked down as clearance for 316.99 top or bottom. Manager said I could have the floor samples for 216.99 each, thats with the radio, covers, and liners. Does this sound like a good deal for home use.

I personally like the bottom box, although its odd size limits what you can use as a top box. Load rating is acceptable and holds up to everything buy pro or heavy industrial settings. Chamfered 45 degree corners piss me off but so be it.

To me, the radio and top box BS is a gimmick. I store tools in my box. It;s not a radio housing nor a power supply.

$276 for the bottom box is a steal. $216 even better. For the top box--it's ur call. I'm a lean and mean type of tools guy so I don't like it. Gut it and use it as a tool box, then OK with me.

The same thing happened at my Lowes. They have two of the top boxes left and my $25 off $250 coupon is just burning a hole in my pocket. Not now since that they jacked it up $40.

I'm frankly surprised and upset that arguably their best box that they've carried in quite sometime they're liquidating while they continue to pimp-out their sub-standard boxes...

I'm not keeping my upper box, so if there were a way to get mine to you without you having to pay shipping, I'd be game to help out. I never even picked mine up, it's still sitting at the lowes store waiting for me. Since it's paid for it wouldn't show in stock, though.

I wonder if Lowes customer care would take it from NY to wherever you are for free......

anyone got pics of the top box? I might be interested in buying the chest off of one of you if the quality's really that good. I already got a 25yr old mini boom box out in the garage that serves me fine but popping in a CD now and again would be nice.

How is the sound quality on these?

LOL>

Go up to post #88 and there is a review of both top and bottom units and the stereo itself.
Overall, the sound was pretty good unless we turned it way up. At that point there was noticeable distortion - something that's common when you're not using a high-end head unit or separate amplifier.

All in all, buying a toolbox for a good integrated sound system is liking hiring a prostitute based upon her I.Q. But, I WILL give bonus points if she can't tell time.

That's funny. Buying a toolbox because of the sound system is ridiculous. That toolbox should outlast ANY sound system and even the current music playback technology as well.

I guess some people will have to call an electronics tech to come fix their toolbox at some point. :)

I can hear it now, . . . "Uh, we don't fix toolboxes" . . . "Yes you do, just come and look at it, PLEASE?"

I wanted that box just because I liked the shade of blue, so I guess I'm weird.

The one they that turns me off to the Kobalt boxes is the head unit and speakers, to me cheap consumer electronics have no place in my tool box except for a few exceptions. It just seems to cheapen the boxes in my opinion .

No..not really. The color is what got me looking closer anyway. This box was a little better quality than all the other Kobalt boxes.
The radio was a non-factor in the decision really. Not that I'm gonna throw it out though. :)
It sounds good enough to listen to in the garage, and with my old Mp3 player jacked in..plenty of music options.

Thanks for that. Customer Care put me in touch with the Asst Mgr of my local store who found several top boxes in town. He agreed to pick one up and have it at my local store for pickup early next week. Good deal considering I had a $100 Lowes Gift Card. Like others, I couldn't care less about the stereo - I just need the extra drawers. Now I'll have enough room for the old tools I inherited from my Dad.

Thought it was funny that I googled the Lowe's item number and this thread came up from 2010. I bought one of these in April and just noticed it's no longer available although my store still has a couple of the bottom chests as far as I know.

I have a couple of black Kobalt boxes (top and bottom) that are very well built. The top box is about 5 years old and the bottom box is about 2 years old and they both work flawlessly.

I don't need another box at this time but I will check out the new blue Kobalt boxes when I get a chance, thanks for posting this.

Are they made by Waterloo?

I have one of the black boxes too. I love it. Very well built and the drawers are smooth.

Did you just pick up the boxes?
I picked it up last month. I thought there were more in stock, but it appears they have been sold. I still really like my old Kobalt box, circa 2005. the drawers are smooth on it as well and the build quality is good. The radio door drops too low on the new one and the drawer beneath it hits when closing. Other than that, I love the thing.

Ah well..ive been trying to get another set of these, but I waited too long to get both.
I did manage to snag another top box for a half decent price.
I went in to my local LOwes and it was marked down to $151.68 !!!!
Sweetness at that price.
Maybe I will find a bottom ..who knows.
