Look what followed me home this past Saturday? It was a mind freezing day of minus 9 degrees in my part of the world. Sure makes one wonder where's this global warming they're making so much of a fess about!

My LoadTrail tilt bed trailer sure came in handy. I picked up this crate that weights 3,200 pounds. And is 48” wide by 10 feet long and 7 feet tall. Set the crate down against the 4” by 6” stop and strapped it down over the top using two nylon straps... With that weight, it wasn't going to move. Surely it would turn the trailer over if the load would shift even it had more straps...

DSCF3102.jpg

Backed the trailer up to one of my garages. Put a strap around the crate attached to the winch. Tilted the bed and placed a pallet jack on the leading side. And lowered the load off the trailer by gravity. Controlling the decent by the trailer's winch. Once most of the crate was off the trailer. I pulled the trailer out from under the remainder of the crate..

Here's where my trusty Baby John Deere came in handy. With the pallet jack in the front. I pushed it into the garage with the tractor. Even on icy cold driveway, the four-wheel tractor didn't slip... Did I ever mention how much I like my Deere?

DSCF3107.jpg

The moment of truth... Has anyone guess what inside yet? Here's a look inside...

Finally my own paint booth! No more make shift plastic partitions... I'm a happy man now.. I'd be far happier if I didn't have to put it together. That's another story. Look for updates of my progress in the future....

I've been looking for a John Deere with a bucket just that size. How much? I'll give you $100 for it, I'll even come pick it up! :):)

HA HA I like that sign, "FORK OTHER END"

Charles

I had a pallet jack holding up the front end. That's the heavier end. And picked up th elighter end and moved it along with my tractor...

I actually have never put a paint booth together before. But I figure it cannot be too difficult. It's nothing more than a giant Erector Set. As you know you can tell the age of the boy. By the size of his toys!

I purchased the booth from Buddy Turner at Merchant 1 Marketing in Greensboro North Carolina. They have been very helpful and custom designed the booth to fit my garage... It's their standard economy model that they lowered the entrance door a few inches. So it will swing open through my 8' high garage doors. Lowered the filter box to accommodate the proper exhaust duct work. And added several more lights fixtures. At my age you need all the light you can get!

This is what it will look like once its assembled...

As soon as I saw the pink filters I knew what you had and I can say I am extremely jealous, that is something I have always wanted to have. Can you provide more info on the booth?

Very cool OCG! I may be in the market one day, but think I'll likely build a "lean-to" addition to my shop for a wash/prep pay and booth. Sure will be nice to have a dedicated area to spray stuff and not get overspray everywhere! Do you/have you done a lot painting? Do you have a few things to paint?

Something like ERODZ side shed would be PERFECT for me:

Good for you! You'll love it. It is so nice to see what you are trying to spray :)

I built my addition around my booth. I restore cars and often have them all tore down for paint. I added 4' in length and 2' in height. 30'L x 11' H x 14' wide.

They go together pretty fast if you have a good helper. The hardest part is the exhaust fan. It's heavy and you usually don't have a ton of room to work above the booth.

congrads man. There not hard to put up. At my work when they moved they took it down dident label anything on it. Then i had to put it togather and change where the door was located by my self used a little forklift and had it done in a day 30 feet long 18 feet wide. Even had to wire up the fan for it as well as the door switches witch turn the fan and air supply off as well. If ya have any questions just ask

Painted many cars over the years. I'm most comfortable using the older paints like enamels and lacquers. But have used base coat clear coats on a few modern cars..

Here's the first project I plan on painting in my new booth. It's a 1910 Buick model F...

And started a thread of my progress...

 Any heat?

The booth is not heated. Though the four-car garage that it's in has forced air heat. But I cannot imagine that the furnace will keep up with the amount of air that the booth's 24" diameter fan will remove from the garage.

Who is going to help you put it together?

Is that an offer?

As soon as I saw the pink filters I knew what you had and I can say I am extremely jealous, that is something I have always wanted to have. Can you provide more info on the booth?

Love the Buick. I would be tempted to clean up the brass and leave it as is.

Here are some updated pictures of my paint booth with the filters in place,, taken at night..

DSCF3323.jpg

This is the Hitachi VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) that I installed to run the booths exhaust fan. It does far more than simply converts 240 Volt single phase to three phase power. It can be set up to “soft start and stop” the fan. That is it'll start the motor slowly until the full PRM's are reached. Or run the fan at less than full RPM's..

DSCF3279.jpg

Here's a short video clip of the fan running. Viewed looking up into the fan inside the plenum box...

And a few pictures after I straighten up and reorganized this garage... Around my BendPak XPR-10ACX two-post lift and 4,000 pound capacity bridge crane..

A little more tiding up and adding some electric receptacles for the buffer and workbench next to the booth. Then I'll be back restoring my 1910 Buick... Here's the thread that I started.. http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=80163

Are those 2'x4' troffer lights on mounted on the sides?

Yes they are standard four-tube T8 truffle light fixtures. And mounted and sealed to 1/4” tempered glass...

Hey OCG you might want to rethink the buffing area so close to the booth it could increase contaminates pulled into the air flow and ruin the paint work

Even though I have 7,500 square feet of garages, space is still a premium. (I have way too many tools and equipment..) And was limited in my choices where to put the buffer. Anyhow there's usually only me working, and most likely I won't be painting when I'm buffing something... And I cleanup everything in that garage before I do any major painting...

You are one of the relatively few people in the whole USA doing these kind of restorations on 100+ year old cars. Awesome job and awesome garage setup.

Are we still happy with your Bend Pak lift?

Been real happy with the BendPak lift,, and haven't had any issues with it. In truth it would be a great asset to any home mechanic... A good quality lift at a favorable price...

I missed this thread and just saw it today. Yikes!!! Congrats on the paint booth. Krylon is about my speed, though I'm good with brushes :), so it never even occurred to me to think about a "hobby" spray booth. Your love of quality is so refreshing and admirable, both in your restorations and your equipment. Your talents speak for themselves!

Thanks for the tip about using a pallet jack. I've got the Massey Ferguson equivalent of your JD tractor. I use the bucket as a crane almost as much as for moving material. I had two chain hooks welded onto the bucket. These machines are truly the tractor equivalent of a Swiss Army Knife.
