Morgan 140 Vise

When my wife and I got home this afternoon from signing tax forms, this was on the porch. My wife says "UPS must have left a package for the neighbors...we didn't order anything like this." Then she noticed what was sticking out of the end of the box.

I tried to explain that you can't clamp aluminum in a vise that has ever clamped steel or it will cause Galvanic Corrosion. Therefore you have to own several vises from different years (in case one year was a bad year for cast iron). Mostly I scooped up the 54 pound box and tried to look manly. Any box that you can use metal shears and a box cutter to open is a good one. Here is old Morgan waiting to see daylight (or cool white).

Very clean Morgan. I just bought some jaws for the 4" from Milw. Tool. About $45 which isn't bad. Probably doesn't even need them.

Sometimes it's nice when companies are still in business and have parts to fit whatever you are working on. I can still buy parts for my old 1968 BMW R60/2 from the factory.

I started taking the old Morgan apart last night. In a world of plastic push fasteners, the Morgan is refreshing.
Here is the swivel base bottom coming off.
View media item 8271After taking the lead screw collar off and pulling the screw out. It was time for the screw nut to come apart. Not plastic pin on this one.

A final thought: Any job requiring a hammer weighing 2 pounds or over and a piece of Santa Fe railroad track is a good job.

Here is today's progress on the beast. It is bath time for the Morgan. I never could find anything precise about how much soap to put in so I just tossed in 2 of the scoops that came in the Arm and Hammer box into about 4 gallons of water. The vise is connected by a length of mechanic's wire to a bolt through a base mounting hole (wrapped around a bolt and nut) on the negative lead. The positive is the 3 pieces of rebar. I am using my big charger set on 12 volts and low amp output.....about 2 amps.

Here is a bit of an update on the Chicago Morgan 140 vise. After several "vise stew" sessions and a bit of solvent and scrubbing, the vise is clean.

I used my big buffer setup to do some work on the handle end of the lead screw and it came out pretty nice. Then came the primer phase.

And finally the paint. I had thought that I would use a different color entirely, but the Morgan just seemed to ask for a nice blue stock type of finish. A Morgan vise is my idea of what a standard USA made bench vise should look like. So it seemed fitting to put it back to a standard color. I will post the finished product in a few days after it all drys and gets assembled.

Looking good.

If you didn't mask off the little tongue that sticks out of the body, you'll want to wire brush or sand off most of that paint before you put it together. I left one painted and it made a mess and tended to stick a bit. It'll wear off eventually, but if you get rid of most of it before you put it back together it'll be a little easier.

I'm digging the blue. My Morgan 160 is going to be that same color. I also recently did a big Yost 32C in that blue and I really like it.

It's all masked off with blue painter's tape so it looks like everything just got sprayed.....at least I remember that I wanted to mask it....LOL Ford Blue? Oh noes....I knew something was wrong.......

Here are the final photos of the Chicago Morgan 140 Vise. I only had to assemble it and take it apart 3 times. I did things like forgetting to install the lead screw collar and bits of foolishness like that. I left every battle scar intact on this old warrior. The biggest one is where someone took a whole corner off the stationary jaw. I figure all these gouges and dents are just "Work Tattoos".

Yes. Do a search either on GJ or on the internet for "electrolysis"...it's awesome for cleaning steel.

Nice Morgan 140 resto. I just bought one a couple weeks ago. Can't wait to clean it up too. My "wife's" Parker 924 she bought in November is about 33 pounds more than my Morgan 140. :lol_hitti
