yes, i have a question about my a/c. for some reason the compressor will not run? any help will be appreciated. the condenser fan runs,but not the compressor. does the condenser fan run on 220v or 110V?

Compressor is 220-240 volt. If its not running you need to check compressor does it have 240 across two terminals, check contactor (relay ) to see if its closing. IF its not closing check the thermostat to see if its telling the compressor to come on. Sometimes the start capacitor is bad, See if ends are bulged out, That's usually from electrical storm damage. That should pinpoint what is wrong. Have had thermostat base burn out and keep ac from running. Also check the outside disconnect that its in and its fuses are good.

Ok lets start fresh here is the outside fan and the inside fan running ? You dont show your location but I would be leaning towards a Capacitor if your weather is anything like mine has been lately . I have been replacing capacitors like they are Jolly Ranchers candy lately usually 3-5 a day . Look at the Capacitor round silver canister should have 3 sets of connectors in the top of it . One of the wire going to it will be brown ( comes from the fan motor if the top ( where the wires go to it ) is bulged out and rounded and not flat and depressed into the top then theres your problem ) .


WARNING DANGER WILL ROBINSON THE CAPACITOR IS A BIG BATTERY THAT CAN HOLD UP TO 440 VOLTS OF ELECTRICITY AND CAN KILL YOU COME BACK FOR MORE INFO BEFORE TOUCHING IT IF IT LOOKS AS i DESCRIBED .

thanks for the help, the inside fan is running,not the condenser fan. no cooling at all.

OK Glc well if the inside fan is running and the outside fan and compressor are not running my first stop would be the capacitor then as that is most likely your problem.

If both compressor and condenser fan are not running, I would check for power to the outdoor unit first, and then see if the contactor is closed, since many units power up both the compressor and fan at the same time via the contactor. If the contactor isn't closed, I'd check the outdoor unit PCB for a flashing LED or other diagnostic telltales. Something is keeping it from engaging, possibly a low pressure cutout due to refrigerant loss.

HVAC units aren't really consumer-serviceable, so if you're unsure of what you're looking at it's best to call a pro. Safety first!

Or it could simply be a bad capacitor due to the record heat we have been having already this summer . I have been going through them like Jolly Ranchers candy and would give a 85% bet that this is the problem.

Check the fuses at the disconnect or the circuit breaker for the condensing unit

usually if its a bad cap the condenser fan will run ...... usually hahaha
