Has anyone installed a half inch chuck on the 14.4 Snap On drill?
I would like to purchase one but hate to be limited to 3/8 bits. I know it is not enough drill to put 9/16 holes in 1/2" steel or anything stupid like that. I have a 1/2 air drill for heavy-duty drilling, but sometimes drill large holes in plastics where a small cordless drill would be nice.
I can't find a parts diagram or list for the CDR761, but I would think you could remove the chuck and install a large keyless chuck from say the large air drill snap on offers.

Any thoughts? Anyone with both tools that could see if a swap is possible?

Thanks
Austin

I can generalize but like many generalities it is sometimes wrong. Most 3/8 chucks have a 3/8-24 spindle thread. 1/2" chucks are usually 1/2-20 thread. However, 1/2" chucks with 3/8-24 spindle thread are available, both keyed an keyless. I own both. The selection is not as good as 1/2 with 1/2-20 and getting a single sleeve might be hard. I am not sure what you need. I had an old, all metal, low RPM 3/8 monster Craftsman corded drill made by Singer, that I converted. It had more power than a lot of 1/2s that I have used. I found a keyed Jacobs for it. I have an old Porter Cable 14.4 that was 3/8 and after checking the parts lists of mine and the 1/2" model, I found that all motor, gear and related parts, were the same. In fact, the 1/2 had a 3/8-24 spindle from the factory. I put a Jacobs chuck on it that was **** and later put the OEM 1/2" on it, that was a little better. Your challenge is findind a decent 1/2" chuck with a 3/8-24 thread.

You need to first find out what the thread size is of the original chuck.

Then go to the Jacobs website and pick out a chuck.

Thanks for the info guys. I think I will probably get one regardless, I just like to overthink things first.

Nothing much to add except the screw for the chuck is likely left hand thread. The chuck should be right hand threaded.
