1/2 drive ratchet lengths

What lengths of 1/2 drive ratchets are most beneficial. Snap On and Matco both make 10 inch as a "standard" size, but that seems kind of on the short side since they also make 3/8 ratchets in nearly that same size and longer. It seems like 1/2 drive should be at least 12 inches in length to be much better than the 3/8 drive ratchets. Does this make sense?

Is there any reason to buy a fixed head over a flex head 1/2 drive?

Lastly, I see that they make 24 inch ratchets, but that seems almost too long. Would it be better to buy a 1/2 drive or 3/4 inch drive 24/36 inch breaker bar?

Ideal would be to have all of them, in all lengths and flex/non flex/breaker. Of course we don't live in an ideal world.

A breaker and a flex are NOT the same thing. Not only does one ratchet and the other doesn't, BUT they flex in different ways. I have a particular trans fill plug that requires 1/2" square drive. A straight ratchet would hit the frame rail, a breaker bar would hit the frame rail and trans case plus have minimal swing, so a 18" (or 24") flex ratchet is ideal.

Sometimes a long straight ratchet is more ideal. I just lock my flex quite often, but it still has a bit more play than a fixed ratchet.

Again, breaker bars don't ratchet, so that is often a concern. Many times one is only needed to break a bolt free, but several kind of fasteners do not back off easily even after "broke free" and a long ratchet comes in handy.

I still use a breaker bar, they aren't obsolete, they just aren't as convenient or handy.

I think 10.5" is an ideal length for 1/2". I don't want is the weight of ratchets going up. I wish my 3/8" drive was that length.

I'm only using one hand and using a heavy ratchet in an overhead or out of position reach gets tiring.

For me, length = good; weight = not as good.

As for a 24" length I would definitely like to add a ratcheting head. I use a 24" breaker bar and when working in certain areas ratchet action would save a complete reposition. I'm picturing the job when I changed out the front shocks on my Ram 2500. Each pull required a reposition after a short swing because the bumper/body of the truck was above the arc, and the cement driveway was below. Took f-o-r-e-v-e-r.

but of course, it's $90. (Makes me want to sell my spare!)

FWIW, I have Snap-on ratcheting adapters for both 1/2" and 3/8". There is the rare combination of circumstances when a breaker bar, T-handle with an extension or a speeder and the ratcheting adapter fits the available space and swing better than a ratchet.

I mostly use a 1/2 drive swivel head ratchet, but only combined with a breaker bar for the serious torque and swivel to spin it on or off, and using 1/2 drive only so I keep the same socket.

I've got a normal 10" long S80, and a flex head SF80 that's about 18" long. And a breaker bar that's 24". I use all three for different things - so I say get them all :)

My favorite ratchet is an old Proto that is 1/2 on one side, and 3/8 on the other. It is in the "long pattern" 3/8" handle which is 9-1/2" long from center of the drive axis.

Running a close second is my 3/8 Snap-On flex head, slightly longer, than the Proto.

These two do probably >90% of the jobs I need done.

I've only seen 3 examples of the double head Proto, including mine...

jack vines, I am well aware of the adapter and it's price. I am also aware of various companies (even HF) selling "ratcheting breaker bars". Sometimes they suffice. Sometimes the additional length is too much. Sometimes the flex point still creates the wrong angles.

As far as the flex point and angles, sometimes it is the opposite too! When doing wheel bearings on recessed hubs found in dual wheels, a normal flex ratchet doesn't work, since the offset flex pivot makes the handle angle too extreme. On the other hand, a pivoting ratchet, breaker bar, ratcheting breaker, with it's centered pivot, decreases handle angle to something manageable. That doesn't make sense unless you can see it in person, but I don't have pictures to demonstrate. A long extension could allow you a straight 90* angle, but the extension makes bearing "bell sockets" really easy to slip off and get injured while pulling 300ft-lbs.

My favorite length for a 1/2" ratchet is my SL80. It measures approx 15" long and I find it to be my go to 1/2" ratchet. Other than that I use an LS71A (40's snap on remake date stamped 2000) which is 9 3/4" long and my SLF936 which is a 24" snap on ratchet. It is all about what you are doing.

I found standard length not that useful, since 3/8 long handle can do the job fine most of the time. (depends on the the job site)

I'd get longer ones first.

i like my 17" locking flex matco. Seems to be perfect, rarely use the breaker bar. I also have a shorter 10" one which is handy as well.

I use my Snap-On 18" flex head alot, and after that my old SK 15" is the go to ratchet. I hardly ever use the "standard" length ones.

SL80 and SF80 are the 1/2s I like and use the most. Also have a S80, used a handful of times, and SLF80, rarely used and mainly just for reach.

These three make sense to me. I have heard people complaining about their 24" breaker bars flexing so I would be even more concerned using a 24" ratchet.

I can't remember the last time I used a standard length 1/2" ratchet. Was probably back in the '90's.

I have a couple 10 inchers that seem too short and an Armstrong 17.5" locking flexhead. I like the armstrong, but it seems too long for somethings so I am picking up a Matco 15" 88 toother on Thursday.

I own mostly Armstrong ratchets, because I love the handles. My only wish is they had more teeth, but they serve me well. I have the following

12-972 which is 10.5" tear drop
12-973 which is 15" long tear drop
12-974 which is 14.25" flex head
12-915 which is 10.5" round head which has more teeth.
12-918 which is 17" breaker bar

I use the long and round head far more than the other 2. I'm not sure i've even used the flex head. The breaker bar is nice at 17" but some times I wish I owned a 24" breaker. If I owned a swivel head i'd probably use that the most. I have the roto ratchets from GearWrench in 3/8" and 1/4" those are my go to ratchets now.

Flexing isn't a problem as long as the steel can handle it and you have the room. My suspension has flexed for years w/o a problem. Most of those complaints were actually more like observations, such as "I was worried how much it flexed, BUT it didn't fail"

Personally, I like the armstrong maxx locking flex. The release is a little hokey for newbies, which just means they are less inclined to borrow it. They inherently unlock the handle instead of selecting the reverse mechanism as they intended. They look and feel the same. I like the handle shape and price point, although you can't really go wrong if you choose the matco 88 locking flex or snap on slx80/sx80 locking flex either.

Pick your handle type, price point, and/or color and go from there.

Of course we don't live in an ideal world.

That's why we have Walgreens :)

I prefer the standard size 1/2" ratchet myself. Unless I am trying to reach something that works better then a long ratchet vs an extension. I never use a ratchet to tighten down or break bolts, always keep my breaker bar with me for that.

I have the following ratchet sizes:
  • 10" SK Tuff Ratchet rarely used, due to my 3/8 drive collection.
  • 15" Cornwell ratchet. My ratchet of choice to tighten and loosen items with more torque and where my air tools cannot reach.

I have 1/2 ratchets from a 10 inch long s80 right up to the 24 inch flex and I find I mostly use the 15 inch sl80 the most, if it can fit. If I can help it, I use a long breaker bar to break stubborn fasteners loose and then switch to a ratchet.
That being said, if my impact can fit, I usually use that.

I just replaced the bushings in the upper control arm on my dakota r/t w/ the alltrade 648604 bushing kit. I used my gearwrench flex head 1/2 drive (17" long) more than my craftsman premium 1/2 drive ratchet(11"). I needed the longer length to break the pivot shaft bolts loose and to turn the threaded rod on the c clamp to press bushings in and out.

Flex head, 17 inch Crapman. End up using the 3/8 flex for most everything I do. Cept' some of the Motorcycle stuff, then the 1/4 stuff comes out full force.

Get a flex for sure. The locking flex is the only way to go. When you really are pulling on it a locked handle is really nice.
I use my 18" locking SO mostly. Then my 24" locking Matco next. The 10" is rarely used, and the breaker bar is basically as new from when I bought it 8-10 yrs ago.

24" RATCHETS actually,, toooo short for some work.... and a stubby would be tooo long for other tasks...... Long breaker bars and long flex-head ratchets are not always used because you need more torque, but to clear your hands of sharp objects... With folks working on everything from a 4hp lawnmower to a locomotive, there is going to be a vast difference in the tools used... Not everyone will share an opinion on which method is best to complete the job; either.... Some are more willing to take the risk of injury; while others will look for a safer way to get a bolt loosened..
Some are better equipped, and some have more experience..... The tool companies make tools for them all........ Many of the popular sized tools sold in sets have been carefully chosen to be included because of the practical and popular use for that size of tool....Those 10" ratchets are the "go to" for many tool users.. That 24" breaker bar may come in very handy when replacement of the blade on that 4hp lawnmower is due. The blade can be blocked with a block of wood, and your gloved hands can be kept out of harms way... It would also come in handy when you have a flat tire on the F250 out along the road... Those stubby and flex head ratchets will see use when the F250 and the lawn mower are due for a spark plug change.... Each one of us have a choice as to which tools to buy, how to use them, and what to use them on. My last ratchet purchase was a Craftsman 1/2" drive 15" long flex-head... USA made ratchet that I bought in August.... It sits along side three breaker bars, and is longer than my 1/2" drive Craftsman breaker bar!! but--it is a ratchet-- I will not use it for a breaker bar on a hard pull.... that is what I have the breaker bars for, especially that 24".... Beyond that, the 3/4" and 1" drive bars come out,,,,but,,,, I have THOSE because I work on allot of semi-trucks, and would not expect most folks to have a need nor desire to own those big boys... For 1/2" drive, two ratchets; a regular 10", and a longer flex-head, and two breaker bars; a regular length and a 24",,, should safely cover most tasks required on a 1/2" drive socket set.... The stubby and fine-tooth ratchets are great, but mine are 3/8" drive,,, but then,,,that is me,,,and,,,My needs and wishes,,,,,,,,and,,money!!

A tool box is like a Woman's Purse,, a personal thing to many women... Muggers beware!! That gal may be a TomBoy, and her purse may be filled with tools... When she starts swinging that ******, you had better run!!
The bottom drawer of many tool boxes is somewhat larger that the upper ones... The reason is: that is where you stuff the goons that knock your tool choices or borrow tools without permission...

+1 on extended length 1/2 ratchets. a 15-18" seems more proportionate to the kind of work used with 1/2 drive, although you should really have a standard and long, as you could break it loose with the long and have the shorter standard size for spinning it off faster, lighter weight, and more clearance in tight areas.

I have a Mac V17K that i really like, and I also have one of those cman 84T premium ratchets for my standard length. I really like them both, but they work better for different situations.

I have a 10", 17", 24" 1/2 drive ratchets. 10" is solid. 17" and 24 are both flex. Every length has its place but I don't use a breaker bar anymore.

18inch husky flex head has been my go to ratchet for many moons. Most useful for what I do and come across, the extra length is nice. I have replaced it twice, (gears) so I should upgrade, maybe to somthing that locks aswell.

I have a 7-7/16" long half inch drive ratchet
A 10" long Standard half inch drive ratchet
A 15" long fex-head half inch drive
A 24" flex head half drive
18" half drive breaker bar
24" drive breaker bar
The 7-7/16" long 1/2 drive ratchet comes handy.
