Kinda curious too as I just went through something similar...

If there are ceiling fans, whatever you do needs to be "ceiling fan rated".

Those items you linked to are not.

If they are truly octagon boxes there is a mudring. 5/8" is perfect for 1/2" dryawall. I'm sure all the manufacturers have them. The photo is a Raco 727.

Check out Arlington BE1R, ceiling box extender. Plastic, easy to use. Go to aifittings.com

The board and plaster is already in place[/QUO

It will still fit on the box. The ring is the same diameter as the box.

4 of the 6 are octagon boxes, two are plastic...forgot about that.

i ended up ordering some of the Arlington rings this morning. if i had thought about it before the work was done, mud rings would have been perfect. as-is, i think the arlingtons will be a little easier to deal with.
