it seems 3/8 is prefered over 1/4 inch , but is there any benefit or harm using 1/2 inch airline over 3/8 ? it would be a 50 ft length .

also what are the benefits or drawbacks of going from 1/4 couplers to 3/8 ?

No harm in using 1/2" hose. It is just bigger and heavier and unless you are using a big impact (3/4" and larger), it isn't really needed. A 3/8 hose with high flow connectors works just as well.

I always use 3/8, the only time I ever used larger was with the really huge air guns for commercial vehicles.

3/8" line use 1/4" fitting, which are the most common. There have been discussion in the past about high flow 1/4" fittings. I would go that way instead of larger line that you would have to adapt down to 1/4" fittings.

X3 for a 3/8 for anything under 3/4" impacts... Hi-flow couplers like Bob mentioned are a plus..++

Keep in mind that Milton does not recommend using the type V couplers directly connected to an impact wrench.. Use a whip or "leader hose" between the impact wrench and the male fitting... There are two benefits: your impact wrench is less clumbersome without that coupler sticking out, and the vibration and impact will not shake the **** out of the coupler..
