I found this little adapter to make a 1/2 inch breaking bar into a ratchet at a flea market. It is a snapon and I got it for 18. Is that decent?

Decent, yes. But any newer ratchet with a warranty is was simpler in my opinion. It's a outdated item anymore.

I have an old Herbrand ratchet adapter in 3/8 inch and a Snap-On in 1/2 inch. I bought the 3/8 inch on a whim and have never really used it. The Snap-On is a great addition to a breaker bar when I change / rotate tires.

I got one at the swap meet a few months back for $1. The guy didn't know what it was. I think it's worth the $18.

I bought one of those years ago new from a Snap-on dealer. It comes in handy sometimes but I don't use it too often. I may not really need it but it gives me more options.

I have the 1/4" version of one of those... came with as stated above a small dial type torque wrench. I *believe* that it was originally part of a transmission service kit but can't 100% verify that.

The "prehistoric" version of this is the very first thing SO ever patented.

It was two pieces that were mated togther with matching squared castellations and a spring in between. You pushed the two pieces together and held them together while turning the breaker bar, upon reaching the limit of your travel (probably due to interference from something on the vehicle), you let up on it and the spring pushed the two pieces apart and you swung the handle back into a new position and pushed to engage it and pulled again.

Scroll about half way down this Alloy Artifacts page to "ratchet adapter"

One of my co-workers was a SO salesman at one time and has one he horse traded a brand SO new ratchet adapter to a customer to get.

I have a few of them I've acquired different ways. It's one of those tools that doesn't get used often but handy at times. Mostly for turning over blowers, engine cranks and loosening lug nuts.

It works well when used with extensions and a sliding "T" handle.

An handy tool to have in the right situation.

:+1: I'd like to find a 3/8 and 1/4" one for that use. A homemade spinner ratchet of sorts.

I would say you did well, especially if you can find a use for one. Personally, I would have paid that....but it would probably work well on the 24" mac breaker bar I just picked up, for changing tires as mentioned above.
