I'm planning to buy a 18v Dewalt impact wrench. I can't decide between the 1/2" or the 3/8. The 1/2 is a few dollars cheaper with a little stronger 'motor' on it. I'm thinking if I need to drive something that's 3/8" it's probably better to 'neck down' versus up to a 1/2" from a 3/8" drive.

thoughts...

Not a pro here but what will you be using it for? I have a 1/2 primarily used for rotating tires.

I use my 3/8 the most. (M12 and M18).

I do normal DIY on vehicles, restore old machinery, vises, sanders, build garden stuff for the woman, just built a big work bench from wood with old square head bolts, etc.

The 1/2" comes out for wheels, big trailer parts, and truck suspension if it fits.

I say the 3/8 now, and the 1/2 next paycheck.

And use these to size up...http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0021UGAL0/?tag=atomicindus08-20

Hummmm....just odd jobs around the house, automotive and wood working fasteners, carriage bolts and nuts, etc. and such. I do have the dewalt 18v DWO59B already which is a beast, love it. Rips lugs nuts off my truck easily with no problem. Just wanting the little brother now and can't decide.

I use the Milwaukee Fuel 3/8"...small, light, and powerful. I had the DW059 but it was not well suited to working on cars on a regular basis so I sold it. Since you have a 1/2" I'd go with a 3/8". Good luck.

if ya already got a 1/2" drive for wheels and the like, I would go with the 3/8"
I have the 3/8" and love it around the garage, mostly non automotive.
WW tools, odd jobs, etc. use it for light stuff on the car too.
Its handy to take out to the Pick and pull auto yard too.
