I am going to be putting up a 38x64x12'6 pole barn this spring and couple of things that I am thinking about are the overhang and the condensation blanket on the roof. What are your thoughts on both of these ?

I did on mine below. I also brought the blanket down the walls so the whole building is wrapped. I live in a wet climate and do not have a rusting problem. The old shop had no eves and the new one has 18" I believe. If your going to build 64' then I would recommend a 12" eve as that gives you 66' of roof or 11 3' pieces of metal. Figure out what materials your building with, then post spacing, and the material sizes your working with. With a bit of planning you can build with full sheets of material and have little to no cutting and fitting. Saves time and money.

Don't ask.
I went with a 1ft overhang, mainly for soffit vents an also the drip line is away from the building. 2ft would have been better but I built between another building and row of trees.
For condensation I used steel panels with a felt like coating on the inside. Supposed to prevent the condensation from dripping. I just built it last year so I expect this spring I'll find out how well it works.

I did the 1' eave overhang but no gable overhangs. Eave for venting, the gables are for the wind catching them and ripping the roof off in extreme weather events...

Good tip !

I would add, trench the drip line about 1' wide and 2' deep. Fill with gravel. You will have very little mud splashing up on the siding.

If water is an issue, start by making your trenches a bit deeper.

  • Line the trench with with landscape cloth and about 4-6" of gravel.
  • Lay in solid pvc drain tile with a sock on it.
  • Use the gravel to adjust the pitch.
  • Cover with gravel. Do not place dirt on top in the area where the water will be dripping off the roof.
  • Extend the trench and pipe to a ditch or a dry well, maintaining proper pitch.
