I go to the Snap On site and every 1/2 breaker bar I clicked on was marked N/A. That seems like a pretty common tool not to have available. What I really wanted to know was what do they cost before going on EBAy and overpaying

A 24 in Matco costs like 100 bucks. Snap on should be near..
I got the Matco for 50 bucks from the matco man(discount) .....
I wish I had bought a snap on, they are better, they have a screw instead of pin.
Maybe the 18in will be snap on....

The SN24B's and SN24C I tracked in February sold, not including shipping, for $55.00, $48.00, $70.69, and $79.00, and I paid $73.95 for the the one I bought in April.

The SN18B's I tracked in February sold, not including shipping, for $53.00 and $41.00.

I have both the 18" and 24" snap on breaker bar. Both have served me well but I think I'm going to sell them. Why? Because my 18" breaker bar from Autozone works just as well for what I need. No sense in keeping all these breaker bar if I only need one.

However, I can tell you that the Snap ons are worth the price. They are TOUGH and they feel damn good in your hands too. If I put too much force onto my autozone bar, the bar starts to flex :( At least I can break loose my bolts/nuts before the bar actually breaks.

The Snap On breaker bars are the best, in my opinion.

I would never purchase a HF special breaker bar, because it will be garbage in no time.

Not to say the HF brand could not work well but... I have always had a rule, if using the tool properly could cause personal injury if it fails. Do not be a tight a$$ and buy snap on.

I got my 24" Snap-on from a member here for $50, and my 18" Snap-on on ebay for $35. Both are excellent tools.

I got my 24" at the flea for $30 and my 18" for less then $20; I love them both... Snap-On really shines in this particular tool! I broke 3 Craftsman BBs and finally gave up on them...I just had the 18" warranted, for a loose head and the new one has the bolt in head you can tighten as things loosen up and get used; I think this is a big improvement, over the pressed in old pin style and a excellent feature!

I have a HF breaker bar a previous job bought for me. Near;y every time I've used it the head has broken. I kept thinking I was getting bad heads at first, but after the third or fourth one, I realized that it just wasn't any good. The good thing is that the bar flexes so much that you can have a pretty good idea of when it is going to pop. You may have better results, but I wouldn't trust it.

My Matco 18" bar is good, but I would like a real 24" bar. Everybody talks up SO as the best 24". I suppose I might try a Proto. My Easco 3/4" drive bar is amazing. It has so far been indestructible.

Buy a big ratchet and a cheap decent 18" breaker that you can put a cheater on. Personally I haven't used a breaker bar since the last time I needed a cheater which was in November.

FWIW, I'm of the opinion friends don't let friends use cheater bars and pipe extensions:
1. Seen too many slip and hurt someone.
2. They break 1/2" sockets and beat hell out of breaker bars. Even seen idiots use them on a ratchet.
As the saying goes, "Don't force it - use a bigger hammer." If money is the issue, use the HF 3/4" sockets and breaker bar while saving up money for the good stuff. Once the fastener is broken loose with the 3/4", then use the 1/2" impact, speed handle, ratchet, whatever to remove and install the fastener.

If you're regularly working with 3/4", 1" and larger, you already know how.

thnx, jack vines

What happens when the 3/4" stuff fails? What happens when you are in the field and you going and getting a 1" drive set will cost $2500+ just for the trip to the shop to get it?

What you are saying makes perfect sense when:
1.) The job is at your house and your in no hurry to do it.
2.) The theoretical larger equipment is readily available
3.) Your aren't ******* away massive amounts of money while fumbling around looking for that magical huge breaker bar.

I said have one you can use with a cheater bar because at some point you will need no matter what someone on the internet says (unless you spend all your time polishing your tools and then I suggest you continue to tell everyone how bad it is).

I just got a 1/2" 24 " long breaker bar from McMaster-Carr for $42.57. Turned out to be a Proto p/n 5469. It looks very nice.

I have a feeling that they are backordered, seeing as I ordered an SN25A in late April and only just received it a few days ago.

It was ordered through Snap-On Canada, so that may or may not affect things.

I use my 3/4" stuff all the time. It is the go to when the 1/2" breaker bar won't cut it. The 3/4 " drive tolerates the pipe very well. When you plan on using it, you keep it around. #/4" stuff is very cheap at the swap meets, like sometimes even cheaper than a lot of the 1/2" stuff. There just isn't that big of a market for it.

Cool. I didn't know Proto was sold by McMaster. :rocker: I've only gotten Armstrong from McMaster and Proto from MSC.

What the heck? I only mentioned Proto had a 24" about 100 posts back in this thread and not a word was mentioned. Some of you guys need to give the Snap-on horses you ride, and your wallets a rest!

I have a Snap-on 24", but that is only because I was not aware that a Proto could be had at less than half the price of the Snap-on version! Give the Snap-on stuff a rest guys, other brands will work for a lot of this stuff without breaking the bank!

Proto works fine when used as intended, without cheater bar abuse. But I also mentioned way back my Proto 24" is only 9/16" shaft and my Snap-on 15" has a 5/8" shaft. Way stronger.

IMHO most 3/4" breaker bars are made to be used with a cheater bar.Look at the length of most 3/4 breakers, most are the same length as 1/2 versions. So you have a bar designed for way more torque that has a handle that limits how much torque you can give it.After working in heavy truck shops for years I came to realize that just about everybody I worked with grabbed a pipe when they grabbed the 3/4 breaker. If your turning 1 1/2" nuts that haven't moved in years there's no way they're going to move with a 18" handle bar no matter what the drive size.

I sure hope you are. Dude, that's silly....and very OC.

Maybe you should start a business tracking the prices of Snap On stuff on eBay?

I use a craftsman 18" BB, its 21 bucks new, I had it for 29 years and it broke when my friend was tightening his lugnuts (yeah i know...hes dumb) , the end just split right off it, pin still in tact, went to sears, got a brand new one. HF breaker bars are garbage, recycled toyotas is what they are, My friend had one, put it on a leaf spring u bolt and it just kept flexing and flexing and flexing...he gave up...

I never have thought about cheatering my 24" Snap-on breaker. I have no reason to do that. That is what my 3/4" set is for, to handle the stuff the 1/2" drive cannot. Never been a huge fan of cheatering tools. Perhaps that is part of the reason I have as many tools as I do.

I cannot avoid cheatering 100%, but where I can I like to heat with a torch to dis assemble instead of cheatering.

I have that same Snap-on breaker bar and have no complaints, but I have had nothing but good luck with Proto products and warranty service through the years so I would still go with the Proto instead of paying three times more for the Snap-on. I would have chosen the Proto brand over Snap-on years ago for the same reason, but I was not aware anyone but the trucks offered breaker bars that long in the 1/2" size, but that is just me.
