I had the three foot one as well. Very handy for clutches, transmission swaps, etc. I think mine was an SK, as it was stolen from the shop. I only gave $15 (damaged freight store) and it had paid for itself, so it only po'd me for a little bit. I personally believe they are handier for those long, loose torque, needs. For short ones, I would prefer you look at the needed drive size ratchet or impact.

They are good when you need a long extension because due to the twisting of the extension as the impact hits, you loose torque with long extensions. So you can blast the hell out of the your 3/8 sockets with a 1/2 inch gun 3 feet away and have JUST the right amount of power.

Funny you mention that. I have a 3' long 1/2" drive Snap-on extension the idiot at the pawn shop sold me for something like $10 years ago; the only place I have ever needed to use it so far was just as you described, It worked very nice for that.

(I messed up, my extension is a regular, not an impact)

I had a Snap On 24 inch extension that was 3/8 inch on the male end, & 1/2 inch on the female end. It was basicly a 3/8 inch drive extension with a 1/2 inch female end on it. When I used it, with a 1/2 inch impact, it just flexed & the bolt wouldn't loosen. I gave it back to the snap on man & got my money back.
I bought a Mac one instead. It has alot larger diameter shaft, so there is no flexing, so it works well.
If you buy one, make sure it is is heavy enough to do the job

They can be handy in certain situations like with the Bell housing bolts and other similiar applications. However, they can also be quite heavy and unwieldy at times too. I have a few but, I don't use them as much as I once did due to more powerful 3/8 impacts being available now.

I have a locking 36" locking impact extension adapter that's blue point (which prevents flying swivels), 36", 12" SO extension adapter Non-impact but i use it with an impact, call it tool abuse but they handle it well and they are very thin which helps in different situations, never had to change em yet. Only thing is that the non-impacts flex alittel more than ones designed for use with a gun so you loose a lot of torque . I also have the 4" SO that is linked above and a retired SK that's broken and i never changed.

Okay, I need some advice from the pro techs here. For many years I've just used chrome hand tools and 36" 1/2" drive extensions with 3/8" reducers and swivels to slowly loosen bell housing bolts. Bear in mind, we're talking 4000lb plus full sized American cars with RWD automatic transmissions that I didn't want falling down on me. Was I just lucky not to break something and was I doing the right thing? I never thought of using an air impact on heavy transmissions for fear of possibly doing some major damage. Also, I'm not on the flat rate. So, have I been a little girly man all this time? Flame away.

I have two 36" locking Mac 3/8" extensions. I ordered impact grade, but received chrome (which both sellers honored since ordered as impact). I ordered the second one for my home box (back up for when the shops is getting fixed).

I've wondered about the locking adapters that can be bought.
Would they fit on these bars, since they tend to taper toward the smaller size?
