This is my current set. I use the 36mm often with no issues on 1/2" drive.

While we are on sockets I've never used this SO socket for anything but random jobs on the press..why is so shallow, about 6mm..

What's the stock number of the socket?

Used the biggest one I own today (38mm) and thought of this thread. I'm not having any issues with 1/2" at these sizes, but it sure looks small!

I also have a 1/2" drive 46mm socket for a BMW axle nut. It's not even for any of my cars but for a friend's Z4.

Im a tools junkie, more now than ever before,
With socket sizes, ( I like to have at least 2 of each size ) 1/2 drive , metric range I have up to 65mm imperial up to 2 1/2 AF, and Whitworth 1 1/4inch,

all in standard size, then deep, specials, and again in Impact.

also. 1/4 drive, metric / A/F / BA Whiworth all up to 20mm / inch,
3/8 drive all sizes up to 30mm / 1 1/2 inch.
3/4 drive starts with 18mm up to 80mm including A/F,
1 inch drive starts with 25mm and 1inch up to 150mm and 6inch,

then theres all the other sockets aswell, Torx, Hex, Spline,
cnat never have enough. and one day I may even use them all,

I gotta see the picture of your tool box!!! At work we use BIG sockets but with what we work on old 50s and on to the 70s Fairbanks Morris generators we are limited on the number of socket we need/have to use. But I'd say about 50% of them are inch drive 30% of them are 3/4 and the other 20 is 1/2 and 3/8s. In fact we have maybe a hand full of 3/8s.

Last time I did a wp/timing belt job on someone else's 928, a 1/2" breaker bar plus a cheater pipe couldn't break the 27mm crank nose bolt loose (it's supossed to be torqued to 218 ft/lbs). Had to pick up a cheap HF 3/4" breaker bar to break it loose. As other's have said, it depends on how much torque you have to apply.
