Hi all,

I’m looking for a set of 1/4” drive metric hex sockets. I’m considering the 6 piece set from either SK (19732) or Proto (4770-6). Both sets are made in the USA and comparable in price and specs. The Proto is a little cheaper. Does anyone have first hand experience with either set.

I would add Williams in the mix but it looks like their standard length sets are all made overseas.

Thanks!

I just got an 8 piece set of Snap on stubby metric. Has four 1/4" and four 3/8". Sale price was $99.00. I thought about buying the Proto set of stubby bits but the price difference and warranty service wasn't great enough, my dealer stops here every other week, I'd have to call and send off to Proto.

If they are something you use a lot warranty service is really nice, co then it'd be all about what is available in the area. All of those are nice. I have them all although only snap on in small metric.

I have Bondhus and Vim sockets and for home use they have both been stellar.

I have used lots of Proto hex sockets at work and they seem to hold up decently (I was doing 100+ 1/8" set screw every few days), never tried Williams to compare in that environment though.

I have the Proto 1/4" shallow sockets in metric and SAE. All my other sockets are Blackhawk (since I can't afford Proto sockets in larger sizes). Comparing the two, the finish on the Proto might be a little nicer and they go a little smaller and a little larger than the Blackhawk set. One of these days I'll pull the trigger on the deep set.

EDIT: Disregard the above. I thought we were talking about standard sockets, not hex sockets. I too am I'm the market for hex sockets but I hadn't considered 1/4" drive. Interested to hear what comes out of this.

No. I didn’t realize they made sockets. Thanks. Any experience with them?

They only go down to 4mm but I like that because my 1/4 drive sockets only go down to 4mm.

The Bondhus set is in JIS sizes so it has lots of skips above 10mm but again I don't mind that since I'm working mostly on JIS stuff.

The SK and Proto sets you're looking at do go down lower than 4mm but if I have to go lower than 4mm I just use a standard 1/4 hex bit from my master bit set in a bit adapter or bit ratchet or even just in a bit driver since most anything less than 4mm is pretty low torque.

The good thing about the Bondhus is that you can get just the hex shanks and make your own set. If you get the Bondhus that already have the sockets they are 3/8 and 1/2 drive.

I'd recommend the Bondhus sets 23298 for 2" bits and 33646 for 6" bits
