I am looking for a 1/4 drive to 1/4 hex adapter with a solid locking feature to it.

Planning to use these with the E style power bits (Wera calls them Series 4 bits) and not the little short insert bits.

This style bit

The Wiha CentroFix seem to hold bits the more secure with no wobble, but they don't make one for 1/4 square drive.

This will be installed on the end of a roto head ratchet

This shows how solid the Wiha version is vs the more common Wera quick release.

Koken has quite a few styles. And is a good choice since mostly they follow Europe standards more so than USA. They have impact. And chrome styles. images-7_1.jpeg

Have you used the Apex ones? They are spendy, but if they lock down the bit without wobble it's what I am looking for.

Lots make these.

SnapOn TMC109A
Wera 784
Wera 8784
Facom
Koken

Just no info on the wobble factor.

I think they will all be fine, all quality brands so don't overthink it and flip a coin

Spendy, $50 retail each makes Snapon look cheap.

Nobody get bid happy, but ebay has a few of this type of adapter in normal and quick change (QR108) for less insane prices, some in lots of two, so maybe a little coordinating here before driving up the prices (they sold as cheaply as $10 with the seller raising the price as more sold). Saying this BEFORE I bid or offer on any.

All that said I have no idea how well, solidly, these hold a bit, but Apex is industrial quality.

Isn't the whole point of GJ to overthink things? :)

Click on the youtube link above and see the difference between Wera and Wiha.

I plan to put a set screw into the adapter to lock it onto the ratchet and remove the slop there. A couple ratchets will end up being dedicated tools for working on mountain bikes.

Laughing at myself, I already have one of the SnapOn version, never seem to use it, but its there waiting.

Best solution for no slop, buy a 1/4 hex drive ratchet and use it without any adapters.

Snap-On seems to be the only one I can find that makes a 1/4 Hex in a roto head. I don't think these have a real positive lock retention on power style bits.

I picked up a Titan 1/4 roto head ratchet on Amazon for $10 ($10 Candian so basically free in USD) and really like it. It's got the same 72t Facom style internals as most every other roto head.

As for the ratchet end I've got the minny wiha kit and it does ok. But I'm really impressed with the bit holding strength from this wrench adapter set the gear wrench offers. It does an excellent job of keeping them in place without it being a PITA to remove. In the picture I included three of the locking extensions from my main box. The black one is a Bosch and I wouldn't recommend that one, it didn't take much use before it started getting jammed up. The next one is an Irwin of which I own several, been happy with them as I use those with butterfly wood bits pretty regularly. The last one only has a US patent number on it and no manufacturer. I wish I knew who made it as it works great, I'm just too lazy to look up the patent and find out whose it is.

Btw, the GW adapters have a Oring retention ring on the male end. Put that in a 13mm 12 point and they don't come out without some effort.

I have one Apex M-490; one Apex EX-500-B2; and various screwdriver bits. The quality is phenomenal. If there was going to be an adapter on the market that held the bit without wobbling, Apex would be it. Spendy yes, but their target customer is the large manufacturer like Boeing Aircraft who demand super high quality; not the home improvement store customer.

Toptul CJOM1216 is a stubby roto ratchet that is dual head, sq on one side, hex bit holder on the other. Too bad I don't see any options to buy in US.
