1/4 driven drill bit sets

I was doing a project that needed me to switch back and forth between the drill bit and the phillips bit. Course this got old really fast so I bought a cheap set of drivers, bits and drill bits which have the ends that can be used in a driver. No fault of the bit but I brokd one. So now I'm thinking I should buy a good set if just buy individually. Just need the small sizes, not even up to 1/4. Mostly will be used for screw pilot holes in wood. Any experiences or suggestions ?

If it's within the budget, I'd suggest utilizing a drill driver and impact driver. Leave the drill bit chucked up in the drill driver and use the impact to actually drive the fasteners.

I don't like the 1/4" hex drill bits, there is just too much wobble in a quick release. chuck up a regular bit in a drill and use a driver for the screws like archirelic said. you can get a bare tool driver for almost any brand for not too much so there should be one to match your batteries. Also, the driver is way way better at screws then a standard drill is.

I agree that two separate tools would be more efficient, but Milwaukee has some pretty decent bits like you describe. There's a couple different grades, but just be the TiN coated.

Thanks. I don't normally get into this situation so not sure about another drill. Have thought of that but it would be a waste of money for me. So will just stick to the drill bits. And yes, they ard sloppy which makes no sense, isn't that how they are supposed to be used ? I'm using a 12v bosch drill driver.

i like the 1/4 bits for things like pilot holes and stuff that doesn't need any type of precision if i'm only using 1 drill. i'm assuming that is what you're doing. if so, i'd just invest in some cheap-o ones from a box store or something. generally unless you pay a good price they're all cheaper quality. i expect mine to break, but if i only have 1 drill it makes it alot faster for pilot holes or like i said, anything that doesn't require accuracy.

All you own is the 12v? You don't have a corded drill? Everyone has a corded drill.

I have a bit set that you chuck the base piece in then you quick connect the second part in. It has a pilot bit and countersink bit. Drill the hole, then unlock it and flip it around for the Phillips bit to drive the screw. Need to drill again? Flip it back in the holder to drill, then flip it and drive the screw. This was my best solution to the problem. The one I have at home is a Kobalt brand.

I use the Milwaukee Shockwave drill bit set on wood and metal regularly with no issues.

Most homeowners don't need the accuracy to be able to hold 0.000mm +/- so these bits can be very handy. I have a few sets and really like the milwaukee shockwave. HD has a set on sale for $15, i would say that's a pretty good deal for bits you can also use in an impact.

AS you suggest, they're pilot holes. Accuraccy isn't a factor. The $5 set from Freight by the Bay will drill holes all day long. Then some day they'll break off the hex base. Then you'll have a regular drill bit PLUS a 1/4" hex slug to use in other tools/projects.

I bought Montana brand 1/4 hex shank drill bits at Menards, made in usa, impact rated, TiN coated, cheaper than big box drill bits individually. They are awesome in drill or impact.

I like the replaceable bits but I don't think I'd trust the collet to grip tight enough. Rather have a setscrew but I haven't seen that kind of set in years.

I really like the Montana set. I have an old one they made for craftsman and it still works great. I also think they make the Kobalt flip set.
