1/4" Impact Sockets?

It seems I use "smaller" tools these days, to get in tighter spots, yet I'm not sure I've seen too many 1/4" impact socket sets out there.

Maybe "Nut Runners"??

regular 1/4 should be fine. I have been using a tekton set i bought off a independent tool truck since 2011 and haven't broken 1.

I found with a lot of impact driver or battery/air ratchet use that my chrome 1/4 sockets were swelling out on the business end making for a sloppy fit. I bought a set of sunex impacts.

Gearwrench also makes a REALLY nice set of 1/4" impacts. Been hammering on them with my M12 stuff for years now, not one failure.

I would look into sunex grey pneumatic or matco adv line of magnetic impacts I have using these for years and these handle most of what a standard sockets will

Use 1/4 impact sockets everyday. Have Snap On shallow and deep. Wish they made a midsize. Also use magnetic which are actually "power" not impact sockets.

I have both the gearwrench set and a set from Dewalt
Both are decent and affordable.
the gearwrench is IMO a little nicer. Its also more sizes.
Cripe has the 20pc gearwrench set for 32.00

I have debated getting an inclusive 1/4" drive impact set so I'm following along here


But are you talking for use with 1/4 hex drive impact tools?

I mainly use 3/8 impact sockets with a 3/8 x 1/4"adapter on those. I have several length adapters up 12 inch to use too.

But have used some reg. shallow craftsman on 1/4 X 1/4 shank not what I like to do but seen no ill effects either. I just don't really know how much power someone intends to apply to these smaller sockets

Makita has very small SAE socket set with adapter and holder they market for impact drivers and most tool brands usually have some sort of small impact rated set with their name on them.

I do have an 8 pc set of no name Taiwan stamped SAE 1/4" deep impacts came from somewhere maybe Cal Hawk Brand dunno that I use and not the greatest but also the reg. depth Craftsman 1/4" have been on the 2452 FUEL (rated 500 in lb/42 ft. lbs. max) with no problem. Just a note about that someone had a few cheapie no name sockets and the first one they used actually twisted and deformed on the anvil and I needed a pair of pliers to work it off. They were total **** lol.



And pretty much half inch is like max size with most common 1/4 drives sets anyhow right?

As for nut runners I have tried a few. The cheap Tekton's I have issues with and a few of them just wont lock in ANY of my Milwaukee 1/4 shank drivers. The shank portion is just too short.

I have the Neiko impact set Sae/Metric 1/4-9/16 & 8-14mm magnetic nutdrivers. A decent set with all the slightly larger sizes but they are shallow and magnets can be easily be shattered pounding up to full power. Their 5 pc sets SAE or Metric are ok too.


Titan makes some hollow core nutdrivers up to 9/16 and 14mm but never could get past the shipping charges trying to source them.


And on Amazon there is VIM set with decent reviews that has both shallow and deep nutsetters in one set. But come only SAE or Metric per set. Could buy some full socket sets for around the same money

I saw a number of boxes of Craftsman 1/4" impact sockets at the Sears Outlet store in San Diego. These were normal length (not deep sockets), black oxide 6 point with laser and engraved sizes. They were also US made (G2, Danaher, ca. 2004 - 2008) and were $10.99/set if memory serves.

They used to, I have a few from Snap On. My full mid sizes sets are Macs, they still make them.

Genius makes a really nice 55pc kit. I bought one for using on my Blue Point 1/4 air impact. They sockets are well made and relatively thin walled.

Have a set of Snap-on swivel impact sockets, and a set of Snap on chrome flex sockets in both SAE and Metric.

Prefer the impact swivels simply because they are stiffer.

I have a master set of Genius 1/4" impacts, bought off an independent tool truck. Love them and use them daily. Replaced a few lost ones with Snap-On, for the money I would take Genius. Just as good in that low torque application.

I bought a sae set of usa craftsman industrial from Grainger on close out about 2 years a go they work well. My metric deep/shallow are from Gearwrench which also are really nice.

I have two motor situations that are reduced head flange bolts. To date I've busted a few 8mm on those basturds. And a 3/8" drive 8 is too large to fit into the recessed area. Other then that, I haven't a clue but someday.....


Truth be told I mainly bought them to fill out my socket collection.

M12 1/4" gun is what made me get 1/4 impacts. Use it on oil and trans pans, interior, trim, engine... just about anything that is not seriously torque. Absolutely hate wallowing out chrome sockets on impacts, and that gun will ruin chrome sockets.

Its great for body mouldings where the fastener will spin if you tried without an impact, I'm thinking of the front grille of a vehicle.

I've got a magnetic set of GP metric, great purchase and my only magnetic sockets. I will say they are impact as they are made by Grey "Pneumatic"

They're really good sockets. I lost my 5/16" and replaced it with a Snap-on, which deformed more in less than a month than years of use in the GW. I went overkill and spent a couple hundred on their master set with all the extensions, adapters and wobble sockets (Gearwrench 84903).
