Most of my repairs are "home owners" jobs and I find my 1/4" socket set indispensable.

Year ago, Sears made a blow molded plastic box for 1/4" sockets. It also had space for a ratchet, a couple of extensions, etc. The only problem was it did not have space for both English and Metric.

I'm looking for some something similar. Plastic or metal. I would prefer something that holds the sockets upright and inline.

Have you considered getting a hollow box and cutting foam to size, and/or installing socket rails?

I think you want this, just the case and fill with your existing hardware. The set is 144TMPB. I don't know the part number but try contacting "mrshuan" here who is a snap on dealer and he might be able to help.

I'm looking for something small. Just 6-8 standard depth English sockets and 6-8 standard depth metric sockets. a ratchet and a couple of extensions.

Williams sells empty metal flip top boxes for socket sets. I don't know if they come with foam but you can buy all sorts of foam from McMaster.com and cut to fit your set. Or for the $ you can probably just buy the boxed sets from harbor freight ready to go.

I tried all sorts of things for this. I also have dedicated 1/4" sets for various things. Recently, I found that Klein zippered canvas bags work the best and take up the least amount of space. Those plastic ones are very big and use up a lot of precious space.

Nylon zippered bags you can get at Walmart.
I also have some I got at Sears.
Great for punches and chisels.

Where do I find a box ?

Anywhere - markets, ebay, craigs list, swap meets, etc. Any blow-moulded ABS case about the size you want.

Dremel out the innards, cut foam to size, or put wood/plastic in first to attach rails to, and then put foam around it all for other bits.

Metal case will do just fine, especially at size you're looking for.

I was looking at doing something similar for my Koken 3/8 sockets, and then realised I had enough to fill a whole tray, let alone a box... lol
