I tinker with pretty much everything and use 1/4 more than 3/8. Nearly everything 14mm or 1/2 and smaller I use 1/4". That means almost everything that is not heavy equiptment or heavy parts on cars or motorcycles 1/4" is the first line.

Since everybody is sharing what they have, this is my most complete and versatile set:

the first socket set I bought was a 1/4 inch set. I still have it although I have added many extras to it. Use it all the time, from electronics to cars. Also great for screwdriver bits

first of all, i'll say that i work on const eq for a living.

i use 1/4" dr quite a bit, and for a couple particular jobs, it's the only thing i reach for.

i have full set shallow/deep in std, select few in mm, and select few std & mm swivels.

i have full sets, shallow, deep, std & metric in the garage.

If you want to give them a try, I saw these in the "hot deal index" thread from Lowes. For 10 clams what do you have to lose?

I picked up this set (ok, two), and am very impressed. I haven't owned any Kobalt stuff before, but I like it a lot. Super-fine, tight ratchet, good socket fit (6pt), and great finish. Darn near SK quality IMO.

Speaking of SK, I use these all the time, and they are incredibly handy:

First off I have to say you sound like my dad, he would use a 1/2" ratchet with a 7/16" all day long before going a grabbing a 1/4" drive. When it come to 1/4", all you really need is craftsman sockets, find and buy a ratchet you like. Of all the drive sizes, I feel 1/4" is the most lost and at $3 a socket for a craftsman, I'm not too heart broken. 1/4" is size you are not going to break.

they are defiantly worth it, I have a snap on set from 4-15mm in short and deep, then a second set of deep metric snap ons, a set of SK standard short, and snapy standard deep. I would say they are completely necessary.. I've never seen a 3/8 drive 4 or 5.5mm socket. they are also good when clearance on the side of the bolt is an issue.

If I had to pick between 1/4" and 3/8" I would take 1/4". I find myself using 1/4'' alot more than 3/8".

I used my 1/4 inch drive set today.
The carburetor on my Craftsman lawn mower has a 1/2 inch bolt holding on the cover and their is minimum clearance.
With the 1/4 inch ratchet and the 1/2 inch socket that came with the ratchet set, it made the job easy.
Therefore, I use the 1/4 inch drive set for many items and would recommend getting a set.
