Looking for a new 1" drive impact. Anybody have some positive experiences to share? I like IR but would consider other brands if there are good experiences. This will be used daily for 1 - 2 hours off and on doing undercarriage work.

Pistol grip or d-ring/chainsaw style? Regular or extended anvil?

Both IR and CP make decent pistol grip style guns, but I'd stay away from the titanium IR gun, it just doesn't have enough balls despite claims of 1350ft/lb.

IR is probably the better ones out there. they get pretty expensive

I would like to stay under 2 grand.... :(

I like D handle style and either way on the anvil I have tons of extensions.

The 2190ti? I was looking at that one good to know about your experience with the power on them

Note: I do have a 293 IR that I purchased at a significantly reduced price several years ago, but it does have some trouble on some fasteners I run into.

on every other drive size i say go with IR. however the only 1'' gun i've ever been around was a CP and it is a good gun, although it is very old. but if i were to replace it, i'd go with IR.

I don't own one but the ones at work are IR's, I would have to look at the model for ya. They almost never get used unless tires are coming off but they're good guns.

Cool, preciate ya. I'm almost kinda leaning toward a composite one just for the reduction in weight lugging it around all day, which is why I am curious about the 2190.

I wouldn't say that the 2190 is weak, it's just not quite a "big boy" one inch gun like an IR 285 is. The 2190 is more of an overgrown 3/4" gun. I've got some pics I'll post when I get home from work that shows how the 2141, 2190, and 285 compare, so you can see what I'm talking about.

As promised, here's a comparison photo. The gun on the top is my 2141 3/4" gun, the middle is the IR 2190, and the bottom is the IR 285.

Claimed output is as follows:
2141 - 1200ft/lb
2190 - 1600ft/lb
285 - 1450ft/lb

Our shop runs around 150-160psi on our 1/2" lines and I'd rate the actual output of the guns as follows:

2141 - 950-1000ft/lb
2190 - 1000-1100ft/lb
285 - 1600ft/lb or so

For stuff like truck tires the 2190 is great, easy to manhandle around, and hard to overtorque studs because the socket stops spinning at around 525ft/lb, but we occasionally have to grab the 285 to take care of the occasional lugnut that the 2190 won't take off. It's really more of a 3/4"+ gun than a 1" gun and if you look at the picture, you can see that it just doesn't have the body size that the 285 has or the anvil size, and thus the torque. For undercarriages on something D-5 sized or so, it might be a bit undersized, and for sure it's undersized if you are in the D-7 or D-8 territory.

I'd rather have an IR 285 or a CP 797 that puts out a true 1400ft/lb than a 2190 that significantly overstates it's output at 1600ft/lb. If that 293 isn't working out on some of your stuff, you'd be sorely disappointed with the 2190, and it might be time to take some serious looks at the #5 spline stuff out there.

I don't have any experience with the one inch IR. I've been a fan of the 3/4" IR261 impact for a long time. It's not cheap, and not light, but it's tough and it pulls good.

I do have a bunch of experience with the old inch drive "D" handled Chicago Pneumatic impacts though. Not light at all, and nowhere near being compact, they're very tough, very relivable, and they pull great. Keep the gearbox full, and shoot some oil in the air coupling every so often, and it will last for a hell of a lot longer than you want to tote it around.

Talk to your tire service guys and see what they use. A mobile tire service guy is even better. If something is a piss poor design, weak, or fragile, it'll fail pretty quick being used for mobile tire repairs.

Make sure that the steel piping from the compressor, the hoses, and the connectors are adequate, too. Big impacts require lots of CFM. The difference that something as simple as a hose can make is substantial.

I probably better start looking at spline then or 1 1/2 square, the 293 I have indeed does have some problems on some fasteners..... I need to get smart and go big or go home

I forgot to mention that we also have two CP 797's at work, but they are seldom used compared to the IR 285. Part of that is weight, like most CP guns, they are a bit heavier than the IR equivalent. The other part is that most of the guys in the shop prefer the handles on the IR guns.

If you are interested in the 285, it comes in long or short anvil, and the 295 is the same gun in pistol grip style.

Also make sure that you have at least a 1/2" supply line feeding your gun, they really need volume to run properly, and 3/8" won't cut it.

Oh hey how do you like the 295?? How big do you work on btw?

I really like it and they hold up good. The biggest dozer I have worked on is a D10 and the biggest excavator is a 385. The 293 you mentioned is pretty much the best 1" gun out there, we had one in the shop and it would do the 2000 ft lbs that they advertise.
