I'm, sure you could put 250K in a box and tools but even if the tools were in good shape, who's got 100K to put into tools? Not some mechanic or other blue collar guy, if someone has 100k to drop on a box and tools odds are he's got the cash to buy whatever he wants brand new.

250k is a lot of dough
I figured mine at 140k in 1996 , but pretty much stopped buying tools after 2001
and that covers three rigs ,8 boxes
but a lot of my stuff is 20 years old now
it ain't hard if you are a snap on junkie

What turns me off about the box is the stickers all over it; and the dirty blow molded specialty tool cases; and then there's the lack of organization too........

I am sure Purchase price of the tools I had in my box at work were well over 100 grand. The boxes alone empty were worth over 10. But I don't see 250 grand in this box, not too much different. Of course my tool purchases have gone way down for work tools. I have a hard time paying some of the new prices. I have had mac guys come and go, matco guys come and go and there is none now and the cornwell guy in this area may be going. I get buy with a lot of what I got at this point. I see new guys in the field going crazy with purchases. I'll tell you for a cut off wheel or something I am fine with a HF unit I can buy 10 of them for the price of one truck sold unit. Anyway's the main part of this nobody getting into the field has 100 grand to drop on tool! I cannot see this selling.

As for divorce or something. I don't think it is legal to force someone to sell the means to your livelihood and prevent you from making a living. I tend to believe most likely health or something. nobody said it wasn't mental health :wtf:

Far be it from me to defend his price (I'm not) but he does say in the ad: "PLUS ALL 34 DRAWERS ARE FILLED WITH MATCO AND SNAP-ON TOOLS. THE PICTURES DON'T SHOW THE AMOUNT OF TOOLS THAT ARE IN THIS TOOL BOX." So, I guess there is a bunch of tools that he didn't take pictures of; I don't think it is worth what he is asking. My local craigslist has ads that start with.... "not wrenching anymore" or "quitting the business", "must sell now", etc. etc. and many people seem to be selling their tools. I think allot of these ebay ads and high priced craigslist ads have quite a bit of emotion or desperation built into them; as these were the things that were a guys "livelihood" at one point. They probably perceive this as their last shot to get money out of their career; that is over. Unfortunately, all these tools are going to sell way cheaper then they ever would have, when the economy was better!

Now here's a pointed question for those in this thread-
at the ends of your careers, can you ever imagine getting rid of a lifetime worth of tools?

While I'm not a wrench, I have to have some tools, even for retirement, and I know, as any collection I have increases, I always wonder "What if", with respect to a certain type of tool. Thusly, I can't get rid of them. Maybe when you have a lifetime worth of tools, then you can get rid of them for just a small box worth and travel.

It is reality to know that your lifetime of tool collecting will be worth under 50% of cost at best. When selling these items if you take your time and sell them one or a few items at a time by someone who knows what they are selling you may get good money. To lump them in one sale like this 10 to 15% is a reality, like it or don't.

I was just thinking the same thing. You could get 7 of those SO sets including 7 54" KRL boxes and roller cabinets (over 7000 pcs.) for the estimated original cost of those tools. I have a hard time believing 1/4 of a million dollars was the original price. Snap-on certainly hasn't gone down in cost over the years and is more expensive than MATCO.

The guy is fantasizing.
"Here, I'll throw it up there for a quarter Mill... but call me for a description of the tools, because for a quarter Mill, I can't be bothered to clean them, let alone take pictures of all of 'em and pony up for the extra fees for the ad."

It takes all kinds of people to make the world go round. Unfortunately, that means it also takes idiots.

He's got a really long end date for the posting and a contact phone number. I'll bet he's just taking out an ebay internet ad trolling for interest.

How 'bout we all start calling him and offering $3,000... $5,000, $2,500... ask if he'll sell the box without the tools, ask if he'll break up the tool set... "Hi, I saw your ad on ebay... I'm looking for a single 9/16 Snap-on combo wrench. Would you be interested in just selling that? You'd probably make more money if you sold it all individually... you know, like when they say it's more profitable to sell a car as individual parts rather than the whole thing?"

Not defending by any means, but alot is going to pend on what is in the drawers not shown.

I have one drawer in a box that has 2 diagnostic computers and adapters etc....it would cost around 30-40k (easily) for just them. Not to mention how fast specialty tools add up.

I have to agree with previous post, if he is going to ask that kinda money he really needs to have a complete set of pics and an inventory of what is there.
