100 amp service

I'm needing to run power to my pole building/garage, wanting to run 100amp to it from the 200amp panel in my home. The pole building is about 150ft away from my house. I was looking at using 2-2-2-4 mobile home feeder. I have read on this for that's what a lot of people are using, the guy at lowes said I would need 4/0 size for that distance. was looking at the direct burial to save some $

First, #2 AL is 90 amp wire. Second, I'd never recommend direct bury. PVC is cheap. Third, there is no way of knowing what size wire you need without knowing what your electrical loads will be in your shop.

Is this going to be a one man shop? What equipment?

The home depot guy was trying to get u to spend extra money on cable u dont need!! With just the numbers u gave, u could get away with #2 MHF @ 90a with approx 3.6% voltage drop at full load! Of course if this will just be a one man shop, then you would be hard pressed to ever max out the service!

U could do direct bury but conduit would be better. Also make sure whatever cable u buy is rated RHH/RHH2 which means its rated for indoor use!

#2 MHF @ 150' with a full load of 90A is less than 4% VD. To say you need #4/0 is a wild guess. To say #2 is what you need is a wild guess. As Aceman has said, you need to estimate your possible amperage usage to figure out the feed size you need.

It will be a one man shop. compressor, welder, lift, heater, light, outlets, ect.
Can you put direct burial in conduit? and does it have to be in conduit from box to box? would be better off going to an electrical supply store? rather than a box store.

Elec or gas heater?

Yes, direct burial can go in conduit. No, it doesnt have to be in conduit from box to box. However, cable assemblies like MHF HAS to be in conduit when ran inside because there is no overall jacket!

As far as where to go, thats sonething you will have to figure out based on price and availability!

Hopefully to add a little more clarity for direct bury from panel to panel, direct bury cable such as URD can only be installed outside the structure and would need to be in conduit where exposed above ground. When using URD the feed into the house would need to transition to SER via a jbox for the finish of the run inside the house to the panel, same on the detached shop end. As for MHF, it is approved to be installed inside so it can be used from panel to panel, but it will need to be in conduit where exposed above ground and also in conduit where inside the structure. If you don't want to do conduit inside then you would need to transition to SER via a jbox for the inside run to the panel. SER has the same install methods as NM-b.
