Hey guys, not the garage framing is done I am looking for a garage door. I picked the following:
- 18x8 Clopay classic collection, 2in thick R18 and top row of insulated glass for light.
Home depot sells this exact door for $2600 plus tax.

The garage guy wants $3600 for this door installed, please keep in mind I have nothing, no tracks, torsion spring etc etc. PLUS an additional $600 for a liftmaster jackshaft opener (no battery).

SO, I know nothing about this stuff. I do not know how much it will cost in material to install this door. Is his labor pricing fair??

The door will be installed "following the roof" method.

Re: $1000 to install a grage door?

Not sure what the market is on Long Island but that is fully double what a pro service charges down here in North Carolina. An 18' door will require two guys but a competent crew will have the whole thing done in about 2-2.5 hours. That price is ridiculous.

I'm with kaymccampbell, I was going to install my own and it was literally $150 cheaper for me to hire it out. After watching him do mine, I would have been there messing with it for a week trying to get it perfect.

Re: $1000 to install a grage door?

Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you what I actually paid. Install on two 9' doors were $415 as the tracks and openers were already there. It would have been + $220 if there were no tracks and + $180 to install two openers. Pricing on my Clopay insulated doors was $700 each. So apples to apples, I would have been in it for $700 x 2 (doors) + $635 (door install)+ $400 (two Liftmaster openers) + $180 (opener install) = $2615 all in. Since you are at $4200 for a single 18' door all in, I think you are getting taken to the cleaners. I totally understand that you are going to pay more on Long Island, but that is a bit excessive.

Something costing x2 on Long Island vs most of the rest of the country sounds about right... :lol_hitti

I grew up there, left in 2009...everythings ridiculous $$ down there.

Re: $1000 to install a grage door?

My installer supposedly charged me his cost on Clopay doors. We was much more reasonable than a regular supplier so will tend to believe him. For a new opening he charged me $250 cash for installation. Maybe he was good to me as I have bought 2 sets of 2 doors within 3 years.

I installed a used sectional door I bought from a demo by myself--axle, spring, opener, tracks, etc. Your panels might be heavier than the ones I put in, but it's not that hard. For $1000 it would be a no brainer for me. I'm paying myself to do it. Shop around.

My rollup door was closer to Kay's experience. This was a 14' x 12' door. 2 guys came out, delivered it, had a forklift, and installed it for around $2 or 300 more than what I could have bought the door for, and it took them most of the day. That too was a no brainer.

Keep in mind "following the underside of the roof" isn't the slam-bang typical impact driver install that will work for almost every other door, its more ladder work, the springs have to pull under more tension because the sections never break over horizontal and take the gravitational load off. The 90 degree tracks have to be custom-cut on the correct tangent and fitted back to the straights where there isn't a stock bracket. I don't think the stock spring will work or at least you don't want it to because it will be wound way tighter than its supposed to be for long life.

I think the guy is covering hit **** somewhat, but since its atypical, potential new spring purchase, cobble and fit track together, potential multi-visit trip....

last week I paid $2400 for a 16x7 cloplay HD insulated door, and new liftmaster opener installed.

1 guy approx. 4 hrs, and hauled off my old broken door.

This.........There's also the possibly they will be 'callbacks' if something isn't 'right'......

Those jackshaft openers are more difficult to install than the tracked units.....

New York is expensive for small businesses--insurance, licensing Workman's Comp and wages.

I have had two quotes on mine (admittedly, a little head-scratching, since I have a double-ended, low headroom situation 8x10), and both quotes were around $1800 for install--all but the low headroom track to be supplied by me, along with the doors that I bought. One of the local guys would not even come and look to provide an estimate without charging me--deductible if I got him to do the work.

The contrast is with Arkansas where I got a brand new Clopay--7x12? installed, opener and the works for around $1700.

Local markets, local prices-although it does still feel like a rip-off, and my doors are only tacked in place until I get the money together...

Paying to get estimates should be the norm. Only flooring companies reqlly seem to do it consistently. Would waste a lot less time.

To the OP, you'll need at least another quote to see what your local market will bear. IMO, an 18' door is big and should cost a decent amount to install.

Did you talk to HD about getting their contractor to quote?

FWIW, I purchased my garage door (16x7) installed from home depot direct, you might be better off going that route rather than hiring install out separately.

You can even include the opener installed during the order process.

Around here home depot contracts the install out to the local guys anyway.

As others have said, 'fair' is relative...what's fair in Long Island may not be fair somewhere upstate. What you need to compare is the going rate for this sort of installation, and the only way to do that is to get a couple of other estimates from other contractors.

My primary residence is near San Francisco, but my summer home is in Sonora, CA, about 140 miles away. Just about anything I have done in Sonora - electrical, plumbing, painting - costs around 40% less than what I would pay in San Francisco.

I'ts totally about what the market will bear. I'm not crazy about it but it is what it is.

Good luck!

The high rise set up will add 350$, everything else comes with the door. Do it yourself. I did 3, it was not that hard. Opener is 350 and you can put it on in ten mins. For a 8500 you must have a bar at the top of the door with springs on it. I got my doors at Lowes, waited for a sale, and used the coupon generator for 20 or 30% off the sale price.

$891.00 for an 8x7 door and install. Just another utility door for sxs to go in and out. I said, little expensive. Told me he inflates the price 2-1/2 times.

Don't forget that he has to buy the door as well, probably for something close to what you would pay for it at HD. Any contractor is going to put some markup on materials. Then, as noted by others there's all his overhead costs. When you factor those things in he may not be making as much of a profit off the installation as some may think.

Does his installed price include sales tax? I'm wondering what sales tax is where you live? We pay 9.5% here in Norcal if your rate is close to that that cuts his install cost down by about $270.00.

I had a 10x7 door installed for $200 . he was out in 2-1/2 hrs.
I bought the door from a homeowner that basically goofed , it originally came from the installers store and they gave me full manufacturers warranty on it because they installed it.
new construction .

Just as another point of reference, about a year ago, I paid $4138 for two 9x7 doors with Liftmaster 8550 Wi-Fi openers, including multiple wall controls, outside keypad, & backup batteries, and installation. All new tracks & opener supports. (Previous owner had one of the openers hanging from chains!?) Took 2 guys about 6 hours.

We've had only 1 problem so far; a fried control board following a thunderstorm. The installer replaced the board the next day, no charge.

Seems kinda high to me, but then again it is NYC. Everything is negotiable. See if he will accept $600 or so.

I was given a used door with no instructions and told to install it. I had once before worked on a door, so I had an idea of what it supposed to look like . It ain't that hard.

The high lift aspect of this installation will add to the cost.

Unless you have already done so you may want to contact
Above & Beyond Garage Door for an estimate.

Good Luck w/your project.

"my guess is it is regional labor rates as has been said due to NY taxes and costs etc."

Ect. means..... in NYC and suburbs semi skilled workers expect to make 100k per year or more.

They probably need to earn that much because after taxes, other deductions, healthcare, union dues -- that leaves like $6k/month which probably half of which goes for mortgage/rent plus all the other inflated NYC costs.

I am sure it has nice sides to living in a major city (the food, culture, etc), but I am glad I live in a flyover state. :)

I am from the SF Bay Area. Sister's ex-husband made like $50/hour as a union plasterer or about $100k/year if you do the math 50 times 160 hours/month times 12 months, but he was laid off like 4 months a year, so they actually were living off like $68k/year minus taxes, deductions. So they were probably living off of like $4,500/month minus $2,000/month rent for a s--t hole tiny house, food (pricey in the SF area like NYC), other bills. My sister took in some kids to babysit to make ends meet.

He'd have to leave at like 4 AM and get home by like 4 PM due to bad traffic -- covered in dust and plaster. These hard physical jobs are hard on the body and mind.

The OP installed a high quality insulated door. There are builder quality doors for economy and result in a lesser quality door. Style, options, finish materials and especially insulation factors are down graded for a reduced price.
Some doors have basically a paper, Polystyrene or Polyurethane. Polyurethane being the best R factor.
So higher pricing can be due to quality. If you want to keep the heat in this matters.
For me the Clopay Polyurethane were worth the money.
For me the installation cash price was $250x4 for 3 new openings and one replacement door as I mentioned earlier.

Thanks for all the replys. I woould not mind tackling this myself but I never installed tracks (follow the roof style) and dont even know what rate springs and what brand to get. 4th July is coming , maybe home depot will have a discount on garage doors. I will also see what they charge for install, issue is that they might think it is a direct replacement.

I don't think I'd trust HD to install it. The person they send out may not have much experience with garage doors. Unless they use the same outfit for all their garage door installs.

Few years back purchase Copley door from HD in Illinois Said I would install my self......
HD guys says you pay sales tax on self install, no sales tax when installed in the home.

Turns out the difference was like free install ( plus no effort and they hauled away the old door) .........HD contracted with a professional garage door company.

Do you think they send out the guy covering the electrical aisle?

No, they send out either a local garage door contractor or a THD crew that just does garage doors

Yeah, LOL that the guy above thinks they just send out someone wearing an orange vest that doesn't look busy at the moment.

The issue I have with Big Box install on things is that, if an issue arises, you can't take it up with the install contractor as they say you have to go through Home Depot. Home Depot will blame the installer and claims they can't reach them, they are denying responsibility, etc. It just turns into a game of 'not my fault' with the bill payer and homeowner caught in the middle. But people love Big Box stores because of the convenience...
