I have that same mine.
I need to knock a hole in it so it will not fill up with water all the time.
Got it from my MIL. No idea why my wife brought that thing home. I keep it upside down.
I dang sure ain't making a pot of stew in it.

Around here people use them for a big pot of stew for a big party in the fall. Knocking a hole in it makes it basically worthless, keep it intact if at all possible.
I remember the old neighbor ladies making soap in a kettle like that back in the 1950s.

If i actually knew its history I might would use it for that.
Making soap in it years ago would probably be fine to still use for cooking.
But I'm sure a lot of those were used for heavy metals .
I think MIL used it for potted plants. No telling what kind of fertilizer/chemicals went into that pot.

Last time it was used was around 1970, which was last time wife’s grandfather butchered hog. Pot had boiling water in it to help remove hog hair. Guys that was my one and only experience with butchering hog, never again. Stinks and nasty
