This is a never ending project that I started months ago that just seems it will never end. But last few days I spent installing wood window frames that made out of 5/4 decking. Everything is level and plumb and checking diagonals(if that’s what it’s called) using couple yard sticks. So it’s all nice square. I use 4” GRK deck screws, 4 on each sides, 3 on bottom and 1 in middle at top. Spacing between window frames and rough opening was about 1” or less. So filled cracks up with spray foam, not all at once. Waited while then shot some more. But I need go back over again with foam due to just ran out foam. That be next week. I be dang I had to staple plastic over my window opening due to male cat marking territory, stinks. Thanks for looking, what a ride this is.

I had purchase some old windows with frames, the sashes are in decent shape except glazing. Plan is to just go through rebuild them using penetrating epoxy at corners to make them solid and square.

I use that stuff too.
Just make sure to scrape off all the old paint and get down to bare wood. And make sure the wood is dry before you apply the penetrating epoxy.
I use a chip brush and keep brushing it on until the wood won’t accept any more. I then follow up with 2 part epoxy putty from the same company to build up any surface irregularities.

I use Smith’s brand stuff made locally but there are many other brands just as good available in Marine supply stores. Wooden boat guys love the stuff.

Doing this to avoid paying impossible amount and or cause it is impossible to get.

The ladies of the house want new windows. Then they found out the cost. In addition, it is difficult to get wood windows that match the previous ones.

And do not get fooled by the energy savings claim. All ****.

I hope your project finishes perfectly, and quickly.

The savings are real, but it will take you some 50 years to get even.

Many people see substantial savings from sealing drafts (and those aren't related to R values).

I ran into issues with condensation and draft in winter. Switching to windows retrofitting glass made a noticeable difference in both energy use and noise reduction. I used HaanGlass, and the install was quick - just pressed them into the frame. No changes to the existing windows, and they pop out easily if needed. Definitely worked better for me than full replacement, especially on a tight budget.

If the glazing is fixed up and good weatherstripping is used, old fashioned windows can work pretty well (especially if storm windows are used.) They won't have great insulation value but the main thing is blocking air infiltration.

I agree with the payback issue - new double insulated windows would be nice but I'd have to live until I was 130 to recover my money.

I like my 100yo windows. I found even spending decent money on new ones got me soft wood that won't stain nice on the interior, and the outside can't be trimmed right so it doesn't look good either!
