They are licensed electricians they will be doing everything to code, they will pull the permits, setup inspection, which I will be paying for. Everything will be done just like it would be through the company, this will be done on the weekends/after hrs. I will be paying for the materials, their labor costs will be paid in food and beer, and I also get to learn more as I go.
This will cost me roughly 2k-3k in materials and permits/inspections, I suspect. Which in my end is so much better than forking out 10k, and it still gets done correctly.
Michigan has not adopted 2020 NEC either, they are still using 2017. I don't believe I have to have an exterior disconnect, but I will probably put one in any way. And like I said above, they are licensed electricians.
I do know that this is not a "do whatever you want" scenario. The people that my dad works whole home generators are great guys and are going to follow NEC code and get the permits that I need to get. I understand the way I worded it made it sound like I am going into this all willy-nilly, I assure you that is not the case.
