100amp upgrade

Hey all, I just upgraded my house to 200 amp service, so now I'm going to upgrade the garage from 50 to 100amps. My issue is i need to know what gauge of wire for the main cable I need to run from my panel in the house to my sub panel out in the garage. Its probably about a 200 foot run or so, maybee more(haven't had time to measure out out yet, but its a decent run). Any help would be appreciated.

Quite a few people are using #2 AL mobile home feeder on a 90 amp breaker. It's readily available and fairly inexpensive.

If using CU (copper) then #3 would be the minimim size for a 100A feeder, but at around $1.35/foot for 600' that would be pricey. Also, at 200' you might need to step up to #2 to reduce voltage drop.

Whether you use AL or CU make sure you run 4 conductors (the ground can be smaller.)

If you increase the ungrounded conductor size, the grounding conductor per NEC 250.122(B) must be increased proportionally. It does not matter what the reason is it still has to be increased.
