Ok this is my waaaaay too early thread on my future shop. This shop isn't starting in what I would consider the near future but will likely be built within the next 12-14 months. Oh well here it goes. The plan is for a full steel 100x80x? Building. I'll explain the ? in a few.

So the wife and I are likely living 4 hours apart for the next few years. For this reason the shop will have living quarters for her. So the layout that's in my head right now is. 40x15 apartment (2 stories). 40x15 storage/garage next to the apartment. 80x45 indoor basketball court. Here's the reason for the question mark for the building height. I'm thinking 16-18'. The rest will be true shop area.

Ok now the real reason I'm here so early. I need all the advice I can get and the knowledge here is vast. So here are the questions I have as of now. Heating? How do I heat and should I heat shop and apt separately? Can I heat them separately but from one source? How high do you all think would be high enough? The height is minimum height on the sides peaks will be higher. Will I be able to keep it cool enough with some large fans and doors open? Lighting advice? Obviously need good lighting for the court but there will likely be a batting cage there at some point so the lighting must be really good.

Well that's all I can think of for now. Any other suggestions have at it. That's why I'm here to learn and build the best shop I can.

I would think that you would want at least 20-25' tall ceilings for a basketball court.

You will need to provide more info as far as location and climate to help determine your heating and cooling needs.

Yeah got lost in all that. Extreme southern illinois. Area defiantly has a distinct 4 seasons. I would say average summer temps sit in the mid to upper 80's with a week or two each year that extreme hot. Same with winter. Highs probably average mid to upper 30's with a week or two of extreme cold.

Might go with 20' side walls with a scissor truss to give added height over the basketball court. Sounds like an interesting build.

I have in floor radiant heat in my 60x96x16. For yours, you could heat the same way with multiple zones. I'd suggest looking at t5 high output lights. I love mine and they are really designed for 20'+ ceilings.

My shop is 60x100x18, I plan to have a BBall hoop at the east end of mine and should have plenty of room for a half court setup. :D Sounds like a neat build, I will be watching for sure.

It'll be a full steel building like this

So shouldn't have to worry about trusses being in the way. The court will go sidewall to sidewall so I'm thinking baseline shots would be the issue with ceiling height. I would really like to stick around 18' but we will see where it goes. Might have issues with lights hanging down if I don't go high enough though.

Go with t5 lights. Bright and very close to ceiling. After doing some more reading and searching. It looks like 18' with scissor type truss or the steel style would be sufficient for a home gym. I'll probably end up with a portable hoop in my building sometime.

You can see my lights here. The walls show some shadowing, but when you in there it's bright. I think the show up in pic since it's a phone picture.

Yeah the lighting looks good. Seems maybe the white walls make the shadows look worse. No way can I do white walls or I guess I could but would have to have a batters eye back drop.

I say you'd be very happy doing white walls with a drop down back drop behind the batter. Noise from hitting with the steel walls might be an issue but I'd would try to figure out how to have white walls everywhere else. Really helps brighten up the area.
