10mm Plate

Please help. I scored a piece of 10mm plate, roughly 1 x 1.2meters. I intent to make a welding table. Problem, there is about a 7mm bow in the plate. The question is, if I run a channel section through the middel of table will I be able to pull the bow flat with counter sunk bolts? The plate seems to be mild steel, but she is fookin heavy!

You should be able to pull it flat enough with a couple bolts. You can also take it to a shop with a big press and they could probably get most of it out.

That's a good idea. 7mm is a pretty good bow and it would be pretty hard to pull that down in 10 mm material with a bolt.

If you had enough structure underneath I "think" you could pull that out with bolts. Gonna have to be a real heavy truck. That much steel may not even flex under my 1 ton.

Build your frame and lay your plate with the bow side down (looks like a smile) Bolt or clamp your outsides down flat.. if they don't want to go get out the torch and heat it up as you clamp... you're roughly talking 3/8 plate so it shouldn't go that hard.

Start welding it to your frame from the middle. As your welds cool and contract it will naturally want to pull the plate flat.

Build the frame of your table with threaded holes on a grid, insert bolts and use those to dial in the surface with a straight edge. Its always adjustable this way.
