10mm socket - Lost and Found!

Imagine the horror of looking at one of your socket trays and noticing a missing 10mm socket! How could this be?? After turning the garage upside down, the errant socket was found hiding on a 1/4” speeder. The moral of the story is yes, the 10mm can be found, often hiding in plain sight.

Yes, they have a habit of trying almost anything to avoid being found and put away. I managed to actually split one right up the side yesterday. It was the very last of the cheap ones that I'd bought many years ago and I just grabbed it without really thinking. Didn't fit on the head of the bolt. So I belted it with a hammer. Didn't like that apparently. Never mind, it has achieved its aim of being permanently lost ..... in the garbage bin.


You were lucky though. Try finding one of these after its made an escape bid.

A couple weeks ago I had to change the valve cover seals on my F150. I dropped a chrome 10mm socket in the engine bay and after spending an hour looking for it, I gave up.
When the job was done I took the truck out for a good run. When I got home I pulled up in front of the garage and popped the hood.
I then walked into the garage to grab a flashlight and when I walked back out I almost stepped on the socket laying in front of the truck.
I lucked out because with my OCD I would have spent way too much time trying to find the matching replacement.

Lost one in the house a couple years ago. Was cold outside and didnt have any heat in shop yet. Recently Found it in a ziploc bag of small Weedeater parts.

OMG: That looks like the clip on a transmission shift handle on a subaru forester automatic. I was working on the car and that popped off somewhere never to be found. Seems to work ok without it ... just do not pull up!! Worse, in contrast to a 10 mm socket, the clip seems impossible to find online to order. I was going to bend my own, but since it was working ok without ...

I am going to jinx myself by saying this: But to date, I have never lost a 10 mm socket in an extreme amount of DIY car work over 30+ years with high mileage cars kept far too long. I think I only lost one junk standard socket that I was using on a boat some time back where it bounced into the drink never to be seen again.

I have had some close calls finding them wedged into odd areas on engine compartment drops. A telescoping magnetic pickup and a boreoscope can be your friend! I usually clean up tools as soon as I am done with work so I realize before too late if I need to search or not.

I had to pull the sheet metal ridge cap off my shop roof to install some solar panel mounting rail supports last weekend. Besides approx. 9 billion pissed off yellow jackets I also found a 10mm socket I apparently hid under there around 5 years ago when I built my shop. The interesting part was there is no reason I needed a 10mm on the roof, or any other part of my shop. Zero 10mm fasteners were used during the build. And it was one of my favorites, an old made in US laser marked Craftsman one that I was really sad about losing. I have a big socket set from around 1998 and it was the only missing one.
