10mm socket set overkill?

Now I know there have been plenty of threads discussing the loss of anything sized 10mm but, I think perhaps Olsa Tools has gone slightly overboard with their new 100 piece 10mm socket set. I must confess, I haven't lost a 10 mm socket ever. An 8mm once, or twice but, I digress.

If you're the type of tech that loses 25 1/4 drive shallow 10 mm sockets, 25 3/8 drive shallow 10 mm sockets, 25 1/4 drive deep 10 mm sockets, or 25 3/8 drive 10 mm deep sockets in a year, then this set is for you. I say a year because Olsa says:
  • 100 sockets should supply most mechanics for up to one year

At a $1 a socket you never know

That comes with 100 sockets, and costs what three or four Snap-On would cost.
You could even lend a socket to a friend or coworker.

I really liked Olsa a few years ago when I bought their red & black handle screwdriver set. I had one of them break and found out that it couldn’t be warrantied, nor did they make them anymore. They were only on the market for maybe a year. I have some of their socket rails and a few other items, but needless to say I quit buying their products because of that screwdriver. That just annoyed me.

Same here, I get the sayings for 10mm sockets & wrenches and when I worked at a shop, on mostly foreign, of course I used 10mm a lot as well as on my personal stuff. But I've never lost a 10mm socket or wrench or a 4mm allen (I used 3mm more often then).

At my current job they supplied me with a basic socket set used by a previous tech. It was missing a few sizes that I needed to replace but none of the 10mms were part of them. Not that that means anything, just saying.

I wonder if anyone has actually purchased that? By and individual I can't see it, but maybe a company/employer? Almost seems like an April Fools joke or something.

I have lots of 10mm sockets and multiple 10mm wrenches. But they're all different sizes and types. On the other hand, having 25 of the same socket does seem excessive.

Anyway, it's not a joke. Doc made a video of the Olsa set before Fed posted about it here.

A couple of years ago Mrs Tex had heard me joking about lost 10mm and got me a half dozen at Home Depot for a Christmas stocking stuffer. I thought it was great. I have one of these sets on order and every motorhead buddy will get at least one as a gift. Probably a set of 4 each.

Wonder if Olsa will ever make socks.

How do they determine that's a year supply?

They assume one will loose 2-3 sockets a day at work? If someone is loosing that many sockets a day, they shouldn't be working on/taking anything apart! ;)

I haven't lost a single socket in the past year.... or the past 20+ years. Heck I've never lost a 10mm socket in my entire life. :dunno::D

Knock on wood I’ve never lost enough 10mm sockets to warrant needing 100 of them!

Gearwrench and think a few other brands made sets of common sockets at one point that had various drive sizes and socket types (shallow, deep, flex) that would seem to be better option albeit likely more expensive.

In all seriousness, I could see if buying a pack of these to give to mechanics when you drop your car off for service. They will get a laugh out of it and might put in a bit more care into your vehicle work or might "forget" to invoice you for some part they used. I find in general if you can get service workers to laugh, they take better care of you.

Maybe put one of the 10mm sockets in a sealed envelope like this, attached to your car key, with a note that says FOR MECHANIC - PLEASE OPEN and tell the service advisor to tell him. And even if you get exactly the same level of service at exactly the same price, at least you brightened up some poor guy's day a little bit. And he'll be telling his friends for weeks. He might even ask what your GJ user name is!

When I was a Toyota tech in the late eighties I did indeed lose a 10mm shallow socket one day. I hopped on the Mac truck and bought a replacement. About a week later I was cleaning under my bench and you guessed it I found the rogue socket hiding against the wall. I still have the complete set of sockets and the spare 10mm almost 40 years later. So I will probably pass on the "years supply" of sockets.

For the first time since I bought the box I dropped a 1/4 10mm shallow socket working on the truck. I didn’t see it right away so I grabbed one out of the box. A couple of days later I pulled the truck out and saw it lying on the ground (outside, so it must have fallen out of wherever it ended up). I put the replacement one back. Since I gave my first shrink wrapped set to a motorcycle riding buddy I still have 96 left. Although I guess that one is used now.

100 10mm sockets on the wall, 100 10mm sockets on the wall
Take one down hand it around, 99 10mm sockets on the wall
99 10mm sockets on the wall, 99 10mm sockets on the wall
Take one down hand it around, 98 10mm sockets on the wall

Come on guys sing along, you know how it goes. :)

I enjoy the running gag about 10mm sockets. But I had more trouble keeping 7/16” and 1/2” sockets.
I do too, but in my case the 3/8in sockets (for 3/8in fasteners, not 3/8 drive) seems to go missing the most. That's the size for AN3 bolts and I use a bunch of them.

But I did look at the cheapie HF set that's been floating around the house for furniture assembly and appliance work... and the 10mm is missing :p
