Are you saying .40 cal will fire through a pistol chambered for 10mm ?
I was talking about the length. A .357 Mag. is an elongated .38Spl. A 10mm is an elongated .40cal. As I remember the 10mm came first and they came out with the shorter .40cal. I don't think a .40 will cycle in a 10mm in an auto.

Yep. Reports said the recoil of 10mm was too much, so they made the Short and Weak

This is turning into a firearms discussion, but while on the topic...

The overlap in bullet size is quite common... For example 9mm and .380 both use a .355" bullet, but 9mm has a longer case. Same with .22 short and .22LR (long rifle). Another is .38 and .357, both use a .357" bullet.

Designations can also be fun... 7.62mm NATO vs .308, and .223 vs 5.56mm NATO. Different names and slight differences in the casing and loads can cause problems, but essentially the same bullet is used for each respective pair.

There are several other examples...

Are you saying .40 cal is the same diameter as 10mm ?
As someone noted, there are many calibers that use the same size bullet. What’s unique about 10mm/.40 is that in most cases (no pun intended), the more powerful cartridge (.357 magnum vs 38 special or 44 magnum vs 44) was developed as an improvement on the base design. In the case of .40, the 10mm was considered too powerful for some people to handle and the .40 was a reduced power version. Oddly enough it was the FBI that led the way in needing a less powerful cartridge.
