What kind of door do I need to order? Roll up, conventional? This is a budget build shop, but insulated would be nice. Any suppliers that you would recommend?
Do you have any building codes to adhere to? I must have a minimum R16 garage door. It sure would **** to order a door and have it not be correct for building code!
You should spend a little time to research understand the differences. There are insulated and there are insulated. YoU also need to understand what clearances you need to make a specific door work. Roll up function differently and need more clearance. Sectional can be ordered with a variety of tracks for specific headroom. The big box store employee will only check boxes. You need to be smarter than that person
I ordered mine from https://www.doorson-line.com, which is owned by Amarr. Mine is 10x10, insulated, rated for our local wind loads and was configured for high lift.
I installed everything but the springs myself. I didn't relish the idea of winding them at that height, so hired a guy to do that.
I vote ordinary garage door. I have Dalton, Clopay, and Amaar doors scattered around, plus a few I can't identify, all pretty good and all pretty cheap.
There are two basic levels of insulated door. As I recall basic is about R10 and better is R17. I went with R17 as it was only a small increase over the basic insulation and I plan to heat/cool it all the time. If your ceiling is high you might consider high lift tracks.
I went with CHI through a local dealer as we have them on the house and are happy with them. We have two dealers in the area and for two large doors the difference between them totalled $1000 for exactly the same thing so shop around.
I have 3 conventional 10x10 insulated doors. You’ll need an extension kit to use a box store garage door opener preferably 3/4hp or more. I’ve had 10 years of flawless operation
I bought 2 doors from an Arco station teardown for $150 apiece. Look on Craig's list. I had a professional installer, bought one new door from him. Cost me $1500 total. 32 years ago.
I purchased an insulated 10x10 door from my local Clopay dealer. Its a 9200 series door with R-18 insulation. Total cost delivered to my shop was about $950. My contractor should be finishing up on my shop this week with the door being installed on Thursday or Friday.
