Hard to believe, 2 bad GFCIs, Try taking them back to the store or contact the manufacturer.

Both were brand new but from the exact same box at HD. Bad box?

I already took them both back to get the new one.

honestly, I'm so sick of this GFCI, I'm pretty much over it. Done and done...on to the next project.

My conclusion? Two bad GFCIs.

Who believes me?

I do. Things are made cheaply.

Hell a Home Depot employee couldve dropped the box of them and caused something to break internally.

Glad u got it fixed. This thread got llooonnnngggg

I do ... for now. Until you post that you move problems.

Question to the real sparkies following this thread: Other than putting a GFCI into a known good circuit and seeing whether it will reset or not ... is there a way to bench test a GFCI?

None that i know of.

Who believes me?

Unfortunately I do and I don't. I made a post earlier in this thread about how I had a box of 3 fail over 1 or 2 years.

I don't believe you because I think your house is haunted and that you're telling us this under duress.

Haha.. Could be true. Maybe it is built on an indian burial ground?

That being said, I am glad this thread happened because I learned a **** ton about basic house wiring and electrical.

So thank you all for your help

And thank you to the douche bag at home depot that dropped the box of GFCIs and created this mess. Well done sir!!!!

Funny this. If you recall a post way back, I said I had 3 of the Leviton's fail in a 2 year period, I had another fail in like 8 months...I had replaced the 8 month one with a regular outlet...and just around 2 months ago I had a box of 3 20 AMP Levitons left over from a remodel I did on a house over the summer...I installed 1 of them where a previous one had failed....

Guess what died today???

I just had a Leviton GFI fail as well. It was about a year old and I don't think it was used even once. First time it was tried after a year it was bad. GFI failures are typically an extremely rare thing in my mind. Seems like there's some kind of rash of failures going on.

OK so I think I figured out what is wrong.

I pulled the GFCI and I found that there are 4 wires coming in. 2 from the "line" and 2 from the "load".

However, I noticed that the hots from the line were in "line" and the neutrals were in "load". So it was miswired. I correct that and put the both hots and neutrals from line in line and tested. And sure enough, 120 V from line.

PLUS, the GFCI is bad.

So I think the GFCI is bad plus it was miswired and that would explain the weird voltage readings downstream correct?

Hold on... you said this in a post WAY back but in your aha post you state that you hooked up the new one IDENTICAL to the original one???:dunno:

If it was established that it was wired wrong to begin with I'm not following how you could hook it back up wrong and have this working correctly?
