About 20 some years ago, I was in England for work. I went to a small pub out in the boonies. They had 2 very small fireplaces (it was an old house converted to a pub) and they had just a couple of chunks of coal burning in each one. Plenty of heat !
In many cities in China, they still heat with coal (a big part of their air pollution problem). A documentary showed the cottage industry that supported it. Trucks dump coal outside of a small factory (some of you have bigger shops). It is transferred inside by shovel and cart where it is dumped into a crusher. The resultant coal is quite fine and is mixed with a small amount of water and some kind of binder (wax?) and then pressed into a cake, about 8-12" around with a couple of hole punched through it.
After drying for a few days, they are loaded on to a 3 wheel bicycle and then delivered. Homes are very small and they have no space for storage, so they may get a delivery 3-5 times a week !
