About 20 some years ago, I was in England for work. I went to a small pub out in the boonies. They had 2 very small fireplaces (it was an old house converted to a pub) and they had just a couple of chunks of coal burning in each one. Plenty of heat !

In many cities in China, they still heat with coal (a big part of their air pollution problem). A documentary showed the cottage industry that supported it. Trucks dump coal outside of a small factory (some of you have bigger shops). It is transferred inside by shovel and cart where it is dumped into a crusher. The resultant coal is quite fine and is mixed with a small amount of water and some kind of binder (wax?) and then pressed into a cake, about 8-12" around with a couple of hole punched through it.

After drying for a few days, they are loaded on to a 3 wheel bicycle and then delivered. Homes are very small and they have no space for storage, so they may get a delivery 3-5 times a week !

WOW! 3k for that place with all that character. You would **** yourself if I told you what something similar would cost in San Francisco. That is amazing. Great find.

What impact does this kind of weather have on your regular business?

It slows things down considerably.

With the stucco work we have coming up, we will need to hang plastic on our scaffolding and run torpedoes 24 hrs so that is an added expense.

The floors are usually OK unless it is a new build then temporary heating is again an issue.

Working on the building takes time and money. I usually have one but not the other!

Not much to report sadly. I spent some time today cleaning up and finishing getting my shot blaster ready for an upcoming job.

It looks like the roof will not be finished until Jan/Feb depending on weather. All the December jobs I had scheduled have been postponed to after Christmas so I am waiting for them to get rolling to fund it.

In the mean time I have been cleaning up and burning the old rotten work benches to make room for the science class tables I purchased at auction.

Time and money. When I have one I don't have the other!

Amen to that!

Amazing deal you got there, and a BIG HATS OFF to you for taking on a HUGE project like that. It's going to feel great to get the space weather tight!

Keep slugging away!

I came across this thread when my Secret Santa revealed himself to be the OP. Ended up with a couple of vintage ice scrapers from the dealer that owned this amazing garage before. Too cool! I'm lucky to have them!

After hibernating all winter we are finally back at it. Metal is going on the second half of the roof. We should be dry tomorrow.

What an awesome restoration you have going on! I can't wait to see the end result.. it's a shame to see some of these older buildings crumble away to nothing, so i'm glad to see one getting saved!

Happy to see its finally getting closed up. Your doing great!

Glad to see an update, please don't wait so long next time :)

There's something about -10 degree temps that make me lose interest in outdoor festivities. Thankfully spring has sprung ;)

A shot from the outside showing the two roof heights. I plan on stuccoing to the brick line. Next item on the agenda is finding enough glass block to do the windows.

Glad to see you finally got it under roof. The glass block in the windows will look great. How will you move air in the warmer months in the shop if the windows do not open anymore?

The glass block will probably only be for the basement windows due to the amount it would take to do them all. I have just about enough to do all but 2 in the basement. For the upstairs I will probably watch for a deal on some standard replacement windows. A few are going to be deleted.

Of course it is! Its the circle of life!

As of yesterday the power company hooked us up so we finally have power!

We wrapped up early today due to rain so I took some time to close in the rafters with some foam left over from a different job.

Slackerzinc's post bumped this to the top of the forum and I read it through from the first post. So, in order: Congrats! You ****! Nice roof! Subscribed! Any progress lately?
