I got in a MSC order today and there is a flyer with some clearance items.

A really good deal on USA made drill bit sets. There appears to be a few hundred in stock on both items

MSC# IJ01187707 for $139.00 (Black Oxide)

MSC# IJ01176700 for $139.00 (Bright)
http://www.mscdirect.com/product/01176700?orderedAs=IJ01176700&pxno=38558844&rItem=01176700

These appear to be the same as these ones at HJE

I am fairly certain they are Norseman. MSC would probably tell you if you call them.

I have always had good luck with MSC "Made in USA" branded items. They are always top notch quality.

If they're the same generic "Made in USA" twist drills that their sister company Enco sells, the ones I got were ****. They weren't hardened properly, some were soft, some were brittle, they'd either roll the cutting edge or chip and break. And I'm just talking drilling mild low-carbon steel, not hard metals or bed frames.

I'm sure this is gonna turn out to be a stupid question but i'll ask anyway - is there any functional difference between the bright ones and the black oxide, or is it just appearance?

Anyone have any input on this? I might pick one of these sets up.

Really depends what you are drilling. Bright is better on Alum. Black oxide steel. I Have prefer bright. I think they clog less but if you're not deep drilling it really doesn't matter. Deep drill in Alum, bright is way better at least I think so. YMMV. I really have no input regarding how they work on wood.
