I have been reading the forum for a while and I am impressed with the attention to detail and precision on display. I don’t have a worthy garage to show off yet as I am typically too busy at work to focus on mine at home.

However, I am very proud of a new bay we added to our shop near Milwaukee, Wisconsin that we use for precision assembly of high performance CNC machine tools and automation. This addition brought our total shop capacity to over 60,000 square feet, completely climate controlled. I’ll present this as a substitute for my future garage at home.

Specifications:
Exterior dimensions: 118’W x 193’L x 55’H
Crane capacity: 50 tons primary hook, 25 tons secondary hook, electronically synchronized
Vertical lift: 42 feet
Clear span: 95 feet
Run length: 190 feet
Exterior truck doors: 3x 16’W x 20’H
Heating: 14x gas fired high intensity radiant heaters, auxiliary forced air heat
Air conditioning: 3x 15 ton
Electrical service: 2500 amp 480VAC 3 phase
Lighting: High intensity fluorescent
Fire suppression: Complete coverage sprinkler system

There are junction boxes about every 25 feet in the floor to distribute electrical power and pneumatics to the various projects without having cords on the floor.

We have built quite a few machines in this new bay and we are very glad to have it (see the machines at www.unisig.com). The rest of our facility has been reconfigured for additional machine shop, inventory and office space. This post is also a shameless attempt to get smart, creative, hardworking machinists, technicians and engineers to apply for open positions posted on our website. We build very complex, interesting things every day and we have a great working environment and the best tools.

I have had the pleasure of moving equipment out of some of the automation houses in your area as well as others. Each one seems to have the same problem, No forethought was given to crating and loading out large pieces of equipment. The equipment I was moving could be upwards of 30,000 pounds and 20 to 30' long and when crated would just fit the envelope of the trailer. It became real tricky to maneuver the crate into position when the building used the same dock for receiving and had a steel rack just inside the door and a big saw right there also. So give some thought to us poor sods that have to get the machines out of the building.

When we ship a large machine (80-100 tons), they are broken down and will be loaded onto four or five curtain-side flatbed trailers. We set the building up so we can bring a truck and trailer inside, close the doors, and strap everything down in the comfort of the building, winter or summer. If the components cannot be loaded by a crane, we have riggers come in with specialized equipment to load.

We left enough room outside to have several trucks staged on a blacktop yard, and the facility has two access points to the road so drivers can drive around the building to enter and exit instead of backing in.

Very nice looking building, we have plans to do a 6K building on this theme for a new tool room, scaled down to 60 x 102 with a 5-10 ton bridge crane.
I have roughly the same floor space in my main shop 150 X 160; the ceiling height is much lower, 24 feet. What does it look like with some "stuff" in it?
