This weekend I was gifted this grinder up from a fellow forum member. This is a very early (pre 1940) triple duty, ball bearing grinder that came out of machinery shop. It was saved from the trash and offered to me. Thank God, it was saved, it still ran perfectly before the power cables were cut for transport.

It is a single phase ½ hp frame 165 variant. The model number is W2268B and there is one of the same model numbers but in a 1/3 hp variant on VM.

The VM wiki for serial numbers does not go as low as the serial number on this grinder and based on the style of serial number plate it is defiantly pre 1940s. I am not sure if the plate is brass, aluminum, or steel but I suspect steel.

God only knows why the shop this was in decided to paint it orange and yellow? I will be learning more about it as I work to restore it. I would really like to have another cast iron pedestal for this thing to rest on so if anyone has a lead on one at a reasonable price, feel free to contact me.

My previous Delta turned out great and I hope this one will be just as nice. If you are interested in the other Delta, here is the link to that rebuild:

Anyway, this grinder has the lighted eye shields and amazingly the quench cup. I am not sure when I will get on this rebuild but I needed to get the thread started to keep my chronology on it.

Thanks for the interest and more to come.

Great gift! Can't wait to see what is under all that lovely paint! Good luck with the stand, they do pop up pretty often though. Usually $$$

11b, with that very low serial number, your grinder is most likely from 1939 or possibly very early in 1940. Because it's pre WWII the tag is aluminum. The only steel tags were made from 1942-45 and are pretty rare. As you mentioned, there were brass war era tags, but also oil board serial number tags from the war era. After the war they went back to aluminum. The "Ser. No" tags then gave way in 1947 to the much larger "Delta division - Rockwell Manufacturing Co." tags.

Fantastic grinder. Here it is in the 1939 catalog with the single quench cup. Can not wait to see what you do. Will be curious what the original color will be under the tag as Delta went through so many variations of gray.

Of note on the catalog is Delta turning the wheel at 8,000 RPM and then shooting it with a gun!! They show how the grinder survives a bullet blast without any damage. My, how times have changed.

Hard to believe someone would throw all of that away. Even if it didn't work there is so much value in those parts...

Ok, I realize that you have many cool projects in process! However, some of us have been patiently awaiting your magic on this grinder. Throw us a bone when you're able. This project is sure to be a stunner!

Thanks
