I would like to retap some 12-24 screw holes to 1/4 by 20 holes so that I can use thumbscrews for quick removal of a canvas top. Are these holes too close in size for me to do this? TIA

Looking at my machinery's handbook, the major & minor diameters overlap between the two. You'd be cutting threads on top of the old ones.

Could you go up to a 5/16-18? This way, you'd drill out the old 12/24 threads and have fresh metal to tap threads.

Upsize your holes or make your own thumbscrews with wingnuts and all thread. Spot weld or a dab of epoxy should work.

If 1/4-20 is the size you really need to use, drill and tap for 1/4-20 helicoils. That will clear out the existing 12-24 thread size and will ultimately give you a stronger thread. Just an option.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have the 1/4 by 20 thumbscrews that were used at one time. I have no idea how they came up with the 12-24 size deck hinges. First time I've seen them and most places carry the other size. I'll look for some new thumbscrews Thank you.
