I know little about running electrical lines but after doing some research it appears 12/2 or 14/2 wiring is most common in ones house/garage. I plan on replacing the wiring in my garage with the help of a friend who has experience with this kind of work. iv'e come across a good deal locally on some 12/3 romex wiring that is 25% the price of 12/2. I guess my question is can I use 12/3 wiring in place of 12/2 and just not use one of the wires or is this a bad idea? thanks in advance.

I would be a little suspicious as to why is the 12/3 cheaper than the 12/2?
It should be the other way around, more copper=more money!
What is stamped on the outside sheath of each of the wire types?
If it is all OK I would use the 12/3 and may find places to use the extra conductor.

If you can get it cheaper, go for it. As Justsam said make sure it is the right stuff. If it's older NM not NM-B, it may not be allowed connecting to certain appliances/fixtures/etc.

I would use 12/3 on the outlets with MWBCs split on the outlets upper/lower halves.

never mind it says nm-b on the logo. after i purchase this ill give you my source. Ive listed too many deals on here that instantly sold out before I could buy some. is $67 for 250 ft a good deal? I priced it at lowes and it was alot more expensive

If it just has "NM" on the cable you cannot use it, the NEC requires 90 degree rated NM , when "NM-B" is on the cable then you can be sure it is 90 degree rated.

If you are looking at it online you need to make sure it not a typo and it's 25 ft, not 250 ft for $67. 12-3 250 ft roll sells for about $120+.

I used 10/3 and 10/4 in my detached garage. When the inspector asked me why I used 10/3 I told him that I didn't want a problem in the walls with the wiring. He said: "Well, you won't." Then he signed off the project.

It was pretty tough to bend into some of the boxes, but I managed.

That's a good price on 12-3, but if all you need is 12-2, a 250' roll is $64 at Lowes & HD and you don't need too pay for shipping. So why get the 12-3?

At least to my ZIP code, the cheapest shipping option is $25, which makes the price higher than 250' of 12/2 from Home Depot ($65) unless you really need that 3rd wire, which you probably don't.

Damn, 2 people beat me to it. The 12/3 UF is a good deal at under $50, but if your wiring is indoors you don't need it and it's much harder to work with.

It is a good deal, and you can have 240 volt outlets as well as 120 volt outlets on it both on the same run.

Wait, what? I'm pretty sure that's a code violation and a safety hazard without some sort of intervening subpanel.

The wire red and black goes to a 2 pole 240v breaker. White goes to neutral as usual. Red to black is 240v red to white is 120, black to white is 120.

Cannot comment regards to current code.

Thanks to this thread I was able to get the last roll of 6/3 w/grd Romex a Fastenal location about 60 miles away had. Guy said it had been there since the opening of that store. Fastenal is getting out of the wire business. Paid $86 plus tax. Retail at Home Depot or Lowes is $224.

Trip paid for itself as I also got a haircut and found the 4" pipe saddle I was looking for at a plumbing place that keeps a lot of repair and old work stuff.

Thanks to this thread, I placed a ridiculously large Fastenal order yesterday and will be tripping over clearance-priced wire for quite some time... ;)

Shipping is crazy. I could not justify the purchase except that I was picking up the roll at a store. The roll I got was out of the package. Its possible some was cut off of it, but I really doubt it. The package was with it, but was torn and falling apart, as the wire was two or three years on an open shelf in the showroom area.

I might make a drive up to Atlanta, as I appears they have a bunch of it at a store/distribution center. Shipping is so high, I can afford to spend ten dollars or so in gas.

Mine came wrapped in plastic without the original label however it appears complete. Fastenal has a ton of cheap stuff just type "clearance item" in the search field on their website. Some good deals and some ok deals.
