After doing some Xmas shopping for the kids, I swung by Sears to warranty a couple of basically new, but defective hand tools.

One was a RHFT 1/4 inch drive ratchet, that slipped, and the other was a new 7/16, 3/8 drive socket, that had slag in a deformed broach.

The employee grabbed the new socket and called in the RHFT ratchet; since they were not in stores, so one could be mailed to me.

The old ratchet was handed back to me, and he said do whatever you want with it, we are not taking these as defects anymore, they are discontinued as of 1-'10, one of the last ones will be sent to you, or you can trade it for another style ratchet.

This is the ONLY time I was ever told to leave with a defective tool, and still have another provided for me.

Yeaaahhh, hmm, I'm not sure I'm willing to take that quite at face value yet...

Me either, but it is odd, they sent me out with the old one, don't you think? What would be stopping someone from turning it in twice etc...........unless they are gone for good.

I had that happen to me last month. Had a 20 inch 3/8 extension that needed warrantied. They didn't have any in stock at sears, so he called craftsman and had them send me one. He didn't want to take the extension, so I took it to another store and got it replaced. A few days later, the new one from craftsman came in the mail.

UPDATE, Just checked the site before I head off to work. The clearance ones are NOT the ones that are commonly referenced as the RHFT. They are the ones that use the same number of teeth, but don't have the speeder mechanism, and they have the round handle instead.

****. :shocking:

I've got all of these, at least one in every configuration they make and at least 1 repair kit for each drive size. Thank God I stocked up when I did. :wtf:

Still, it ***** if this is really the end of the RHFT ratchet. Oh well, better they go out this way then have them made in China or something. :(

I think we are about to see a big change in Craftsman (see the China thread here on GJ)
I `m a home shop guy and really have not broke many Craftsman tools over the last 40 yrs, so I`m not that concerned about replacements for my -V- code Cman tools. Well Mr Sears CEO I hope you can compete on price with HF. I look forward to my weekly Sears 20% off coupon. Oh the out door tent sale should be great. NOT:(, I will not buy Asian made Cman tools.

I hope it's not true and that salesman was wrong. I like those raised panel round head fine tooth ratchets a lot. I have every configuration Sears sells. I'm hoping he was mistaking these for those full polish crappy round head ratchets, which are on clearance on the website for $4.97. This would indicate to me that these are being discontinued. Maybe he was confusing the two. By way of comparison:

Crappy round head ratchet.jpg This one *****

Good round head ratchet.jpg This one is nice

I will not buy made in China Craftsman tools either. I've owned C-Man tools for 35 years and have always liked them and respected the fact that they were USA made. I'll buy a Chinese tool such as a big ticket item that I couldnt afford otherwise, or small, occasional use tools or junkyard tools, but won't buy one from an American company that used to make the same item here, if that makes any sense. I have Gearwrench and Toptul tools as well, made in Taiwan. I have been tempted by those "Craftsman" black spline wrenches, but absolutely refuse to buy them.

On a side note, at my local Sears I noticed all of their Gearwrench ratcheting wrenches are now made in PRC not Taiwan anymore.

Its not your fault for them returning a broken part that you can get warrented again. I have had this happen with a 3/8" breaker bar.

Yes, they should take the broken tool. But exchanging it again is pretty damn dishonest on your fault.

I suspect they didn't take the broken tool as they probably didn't trust that the replacement would make it...thus you may have had to do it all again. Who knows.

Stealing is kind of an odd thing to brag about. :headscrat

What is the saying "Everyone is a tough guy behind their computer". He may be joking or he may be serious. Either way he is presenting himself as classless and a thief. And we wonder why Sears is going to the dogs. It's losing money on uninformed employees and people that take advantage of them.

Couldn't agree more. I can't understand someone that is unwilling to be called a thief but readily agrees to behaving unethically by getting something they didn't pay for through deception. Talk about splitting hairs. :headscrat

And we wonder why more and more Craftsman is made in China. :wtf:

Exactly. These are the same guys that steal from their employer and justify it with "They make tons of money" or "I deserve it".
