My son and I received a used drill press and need some help with it. The catch is that it's missing the correct chuck key. I looked online and it appears that sears parts no longer stocks them. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated

maybe find out what chuck it is / MT3 MT2 or JT33 etc and google search for a chuck key for it? for example "JT33 chuck key" (JT33 is what my Jet 14" drill press has )

Pretty sure it's generic size I remember having a universal one that have 4 chuck keys in one (one on each side) and it fits my drill press and drills fine...

something like these...

If you wanted a more specific answer maybe post the model of your drill press... 12" craftsman drill press is pretty generic.

This is the model and serial number plate. I would not mind replacing it with a new chuck if possible. cf3e251ce55843bfd65ae33da2fd0e2b.jpg

Some CM 12" used a Wilton RJ33-13L chuck, is that stamped on the chuck? If so it should use a 1/2" (13mm) key with a 1/4" pilot, size K32. Even if that is not stamped, it probably uses a K32.

They can be found for around $5 and up at a hardware store or a little more on Amazon or elsewhere.

Edit: The above may be wrong. The K32 appears to have 10 teeth but I just got a chance to check an older CM 12" drill press and it has a 12 tooth key, though it does still have a 1/4" pilot shank. It has no markings on the 1/2" chuck.

Well I pulled the chuck and Im taken it to the local machine shop supplier. Hopefully they will be able to hook me up with a new chuck or key or both.

RJ33-13L is cited lots of places as a 1/2" with a 1/4 pilot. That is not correct. It is actually a 5/8" with a 1/4" pilot. My solution was to buy a 5/8 in. Ryobi Chuck Key with 5/16 in. Pilot at HD, cut off the handle, then machine the pilot down to 1/4" on the minilathe and make a new handle using an old 7/16 12 pt box wrench. Took a bit of work, but it is perfect for the chuck.

Here is what my 'manufactured' chuck key looks like, it fits the RJ33-13L perfectly and is a 5/8 Ryobi with the pilot machined to 1/4"

I wound up with a j33 chuck and a 2mt33 arbor, which uses a t6 chuck. Next step is to get a autotap
