12 drawer tool cart

So I posted the 12 drawer Armstrong truck box that I picked up from a local Craigs list and decided that it was going to become my new tool cart. So here goes. First the box support frame, went to the used metal supply next to the shop and found an old shelf frame that should do the trick.

Next up is the shelves. Decided to do two shelves. so went to the surplus metal behind the brake and found some 20 ga 304 stainless that should work out really well. LAyed them out notched em, and formed them up. Then spot welded the corners with my Miller 135. Added a support for the mid shelf.
Then the shelves with a few pop rivets.

A bit of regal red paint andsome plastic caps for the tube ends and wa la a 12 drawer tool cart.

Interesting. I like that toolbox a lot. I'll bet it is very handy to be able to roll it around the shop.

Thanks for posting. I have a spare top box that I might do that with to store tools in while I do some house renovations.

Yes, very handy indeed and it freed up some space in my other boxes which are overflowing.

Put fixed wheels on one end, set to the long direction with swivel wheels on other. I have it loaded up and it is quite stable. Put my boxed items on lower shelves. So as long as I keep the speed under a 100mph and the drawers closed around the shop I don't think there is an issue.

My biggest fear too. I've thought of doing the same, but was worried about stability. I have an older SO chest that would make a good cart like this.

Since there was a couple of concerns on stability I went ahead and attached a couple of pics showing the load on the cart.

Why worry, my comments were more towards my own idea/design. Do you mind posting some dimensions of the box and of the cart? It definitely looks like it can handle whatever you throw at it.

The box is 33" wide by 16" deep by 20" tall. The cart is 33 1/4" ID wide with the depth at 16" . I set the box at 32" to the bottom. mid shelf is 12" wide. Bottom shelf 16". I had some old casters that were from the 70's also so it ended up being pretty much a vintage build. lol

That box is larger than the boxes on the HF red cart. I can see it being sturdy. My box is 26w x 16d x 16 or 18 tall. Being so narrow makes me think of it being top heavy. My weight would be more towards the center where yours is spread out. Good job again!

Thanks to all who comment on the projects guys and gals build, as it has upped my game with all of the great ideas that this forum generates. It has been really nice to have the majority of the tools I need for working on tractors nearby instead of having to walk across the shop every time I need something.
